Judith Sargent Murray’s On the Equality of the Sexes reveals the struggles women had in the 17th-18th centuries when it came to equal education opportunities. Women were expected to become people of domestication while men had many opportunities to expand their minds and be ambitious, and be leaders. What can I tell them about my mother? I don’t know anything.’” (Tan 31). In Confucianism, very little of tradition is explicitly told from mothers to daughters in the form of text. Ritual actions are supposed to be observed, absorbed and understood in order to be preserved and handed down for posterity. The civilizations of ancient Rome and China have long traditions of women occupying a lower position in society than men. While this was a common idea, in practice, there were significant differences in the way the two cultures treated women. Specific developments in both Rome and China led them in two very different directions with regard to the type of lives women could live. Although ancient Rome (750BC-AD500) and China (350BC-AD600) were both oppressive patriarchal societies, the application of technology, widespread use of slavery and the translation of government policies created more personal freedom for Roman women than Chinese women during that time.
Most of literature and poetry portrayed women as subordinate, beautiful service attendants to men. These men would act as a dominating figure in the story conveyed, while the women were “well-dressed, young, and compliant” to the needs of the men. Since most popular writers were men at the time, these perspectives were largely bias to the needs or fantasies of these men. However, the Confucian values that represented women at the time also contributed to the way a story was written. Ebrey explains how women were decribes in stories by writing, “the image of woman as handmaiden was epitomized by the maid, concubine, or palace lady… the notion that demure and attentive service makes a woman attractive certainly carried over into husbandwife relations” (Ebrey, 30). Confucian literature depicted women as attractive and obedient to men. This perception of women swayed Confucian followers to believe women in the Song dynasty were similar to the stories. It also created a standard for women to meet in order to appear beautiful to become married. Since women were based on their contrasting appearance to their male counterpart, their other features such as knowledge or creativity were often overlooked in comparison to their beauty. As the BBC stated, “when parliamentary reform was being debated in 1867, John Stuart Mill proposed an amendment that would have given the vote to women on the same terms as men but it was rejected by 194 votes to 73” (BBC 1).
