Woodrow Wilson was the 28th President of The United States of America. As the president he supported women's right to vote, led us through World War 1, and help craft the treaty of Versailles. He was driven by a mission and an ideal to leave the world a better place than you found it, and had named many schools and education programs named after him. Woodrow Wilson was born on December 28, 1856. He was born to a presbyterian family, the third of four children. He got a good education and set out to become a lawyer. In 1917 a group of protesters picketed outside the White House, while they were peaceful at first, they soon turned violent. He was astonished to learn some went on a hunger strike and were being force-fed by the police. In January, he held a speech to endorse woman right to vote. Then on August 18, 1920, Woman’s right to vote was ratified. On July 26, 1914, World War 1 also started to outbreak. Woodrow Wilson declared us neutral. He quoted, “to fight, you must be brutal and ruthless, and the spirit of ruthless brutality will enter into the very fiber of our national life". But after Germany repeatedly ignored America’s neutrality, and sunk American ships, He had no choice but to declare war. Soon, around a year and a half later the war was won. Woodrow Wilson prompted the “Fourteen Points” for the Treaty of Versailles. The League of Nations as one of the main points were used to ensure world peace. But eventually congress chose not to join. In conclusion, Woodrow Wilson did his best efforts to keep us away from war. But doing so, he accidentally started the platform for World War 2. The end of World War I left much of America confused on the country’s role in world affairs. Many people believed that the United States should primarily worry about its own issues and problems, and let the world handle their own problems. World War I was a period when countries faced economic, political, social, and cultural problems, which threatened the survival of democracy and freedom and needed a fast and effective resolution which was presented to the world by Woodrow Wilson called the Fourteen Points. President Wilson was a person who believed that there was a peaceful solution for any conflict. When World War I broke out in Europe President Wilson spent several years trying to keep America from entering the war. President Wilson even went as far to offer to be a mediator between the two conflicting sides to help bring the war to an end. In addition President Wilson was heavily criticized by other great American leaders when he declined to build up the U.S. Army to prepare for War. He started a new freedom in the United States. Wilson passed the 16th Amendment, which gave the right of income taxes, and the 17th Amendment, which established the direct election of senators. Theodore Roosevelt pushed for the direct vote of senators and Wilson worked to make what Roosevelt wanted to happen (Document 4). At the end of World War 1, the common goal between the victorious nations throughout the world was to declare peace. The leading statesmen of these triumphant nations met in Paris to draw up the Treaty of Versailles, which would decide the fate of the central powers.
