Basil L. Gildersleeve (1831–1924)

Gildersleeve, Basil Lanneau. An American classical scholar; born in Charleston, SC, Oct. 23, 1831; died in 1924. He graduated at Princeton in 1843, and studied in Germany for several years. He was professor of Greek and Latin at the University of Virginia from 1865 to 1876, when he was appointed professor of Greek at Johns Hopkins University. He is the founder and editor of the American Journal of Philology. Besides editing a number of texts he published a Latin Grammar (1867–94); ‘Essays and Studies’ (1890); ‘Hellas and Hesperia’ (1909–11); ‘Creed of the Old South’ (1915).
