Giambattista Marini (1569–1625)
Marini, Giambattista (mä-rē’nē). A celebrated Italian poet; born at Naples, Oct. 18, 1569; died there, March 25, 1625. He lived a dissipated and licentious life. The influence of the style he introduced, known as “marinism,” was great both in Italy and France, which he visited. He wrote: ‘Adonis’ (1623), his principal work; ‘The Massacre of the Innocents’ (1633); sonnets; etc.
