Hans Jakob Christoph von Grimmelshausen (1625–1676)
Grimmelshausen, Hans Jakob Christoffel von (grim’mels-hou-zen) [“Samuel Greifenson v. Hirschfeld”]. A German romance-writer; born in Gelnhausen about 1625; died at Renchen, Baden, Aug. 16, 1676. He became celebrated as the author of ‘The Adventures of Simplicius Simplicissimus,’ the life story of a vagabond adventurer of the Thirty Years’ War who settles into a peaceful old age in the Black Forest. His other romances—‘The World Inside Out,’ ‘Joseph in Egypt,’ and ‘Pluto’s Council Chamber,’ among them—are unimportant.
