James McCosh (1811–1894)

McCosh, James. A prominent Scottish-American theologian; born in Carskeoch, Ayrshire, Scotland, April 1, 1811; died in Princeton, NJ, Nov. 6, 1894. He came to America in 1868; was president of Princeton College (1868–88), and was one of the foremost men of his day in university life. His principal works include: ‘Christianity and Positivism’ (1871); ‘A Reply to Prof. Tyndall’s Belfast Address’ (1875); ‘The Development Hypothesis’ (1876); ‘The Emotions’ (1880); ‘Herbert Spencer’s Philosophy as Culminating in his Ethics’ (1885).
