Johann Georg Kohl (1808–1878)

Kohl, Johann Georg (kōl). A German traveler and historian; born at Bremen, April 28, 1808; died there, Oct. 28, 1878. Nearly his entire life was devoted to travel and historical investigation in Europe and North America, where he spent four years and published as the fruits of researches: ‘Travels in Canada’ (1855); ‘Travels in the Northwestern part of the United States’ (1857); ‘History of the Discovery of America’ (1861); and several essays on American cartography. Other works are: ‘Travels in the Interior of Russia and Poland’ (1841); ‘The British Isles and Their Inhabitants’ (1844); ‘The Rhine’ (1851); etc.
