John Payne Collier (1789–1883)

Collier, John Payne. An English critic and antiquary; born in London, 1789; died on Sept. 17, 1883. He is famed for his ‘Poetical Decameron’ (1820); ‘History of English Dramatic Poetry to the Time of Shakespeare, and Annals of the Stage to the Restoration’ (1831); and his edition of Shakespeare (1844); and much editorial work, marred in part by his literary forgeries.
