José Clavijo y Fajardo (1726–1806)

Clavijo y Fajardo, José (kläv-ē’Hō ē fä-Här’dō). A Spanish journalist and prose-writer; born in the Canary Islands, in 1726; died at Madrid, 1806. He was editor of the Pensador and the Mercuric and translated Buffon’s ‘Natural History.’ He is the hero of Goethe’s ‘Clavigo.’
