Joseph de Maistre (1753–1821)
Maistre, Joseph Marie de, Count (māstr). A French statesman and philosophical and miscellaneous writer; born at Chambéry, April 1, 1753; died at Turin, Feb. 26, 1821. He was Sardinian minister at St. Petersburg 1802; and at Turin 1817. He wrote: ‘Thoughts on the French Revolution’ (1796); ‘Generative Principle of Human Institutions’ (1810); ‘Examination of Bacon’s Philosophy’ (1835); etc. ‘St. Petersburg Evenings’ was published in 1821; and his interesting correspondence in 1851 and 1858.
