Joseph Kirkland (1830–1894)

Kirkland, Joseph. An American novelist; born at Geneva, NY, Jan. 7, 1830; died at Chicago, April 29, 1894. ‘Zury, the Meanest Man in Spring County’ (1887) gives a picture of pioneer life in Illinois. In ‘The McVeys’ (1888) reappear several of the characters of ‘Zury.’ ‘The Captain of Company K’ appeared in 1891; ‘The Chicago Massacre of 1812’ in 1893 (in collaboration with Caroline Kirkland); ‘The Story of Chicago’ (2 vols.) in 1892–94.
