Karl Adolf Gjellerup (1857–1919)
Gjellerup, Karl Adolf (gyāl’ėr-öp). A Danish novelist, dramatist, poet, and critic; born in Roholte, Seeland, July 2, 1857; died in 1919. He prepared for the ministry; but published a novel, ‘An Idealist,’ under the pseudonym “Epigonos,” at 21. ‘Rödtjörn,’ a book of poems, appeared a few years later; followed by the novels ‘Romulus,’ ‘The Pupil of the Germans,’ and several others. ‘Brynhild’ and ‘Saint Just’ are tragedies; ‘The Book of my Love’ is an assortment of erotic poems. As a critic his work is discriminating and accurate; but all his productions show the influence of foreign literatures.
