Michał Czajkowski (1804–1886)

Czajkowski, Michał (chī-kov’skē). A Polish novelist (1804–86). He entered the Turkish army in 1851, embraced Mohammedanism, and rose to high rank (Pasha Sadyk); later he went back to the Ukraine and conformed to the Russo-Greek religion. His greatest work is ‘Vernyhora,’ a historical novel of the year 1768, which has been translated into nearly all the languages of Europe. Hardly less celebrated is ‘The Hetman of the Ukraine.’
