Nicolai Gnedich (1784–1833)

Gnedich, Nicolai Ivanovich (gnā’diċh). A Russian poet; born in Pultowa, Feb. 2, 1784; died in St. Petersburg, Feb. 15, 1833. A translation of Schiller’s ‘Conspiracy of Fiesco’ was an early effort; but his masterpiece is the translation of the Iliad into Russian (1829). A translation of Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear,’ of Voltaire’s ‘Tancrède,’ and of modern Greek poems, occupied his later years. His own poem, ‘The Fishers,’ is much admired.
