Sonya Kovalevsky (1850–1891)

Kovalevsky, Sonya (kō-vä-lev’skē). An eminent Russian mathematician, said to be the greatest woman mathematician of any age; born in Moscow, 1850; died at Stockholm, 1891, where she was professor of mathematics at the University. See her ‘Recollections of Childhood,’ with a biography by the Duchess of Cajanello (Anne Charlotte Leffler-Edgren). Her works include theses on ‘Rotation’; ‘The Laplace Hypothesis’; ‘Light’; etc. She also wrote some popular novels under the pseudonym “Tanya Rerevski”; among them ‘The Private Tutor,’ ‘The Rajevski Sisters,’ etc.
