Victor Joseph Étienne Jouy (1764–1846)
Jouy, Victor Joseph Étienne called de Jouy (zhö-ē’). A French librettist, dramatist, and descriptive writer; born in Jouy, near Versailles, 1764; died at Paris, Sept. 4, 1846. He entered upon a military career in connection with the Revolution and the restoration, and wrote an opera libretto, ‘The Vestal,’ which won him a reputation. ‘Ferdinand Cortez’ and ‘William Tell’ came next, followed by ‘Sylla,’ a tragedy. ‘The Hermit of the Chaussée d’Antin’ is his best thing in prose.
