Bacillus is a genus of Gram-positive, bacilli, or rod-shaped bacteria. B. anthracis is the causative agent for anthrax. B. cereus is another medically important pathogen, that has been implicated in food poisoning. 

Gram-positive bacteria are those that stain purple in the Gram staining procedure. They have a thick peptidoglycan cell wall that retains the purple crystal violet, which is the primary stain. The secondary stain safranine is not visible. In contrast, the Gram-negative bacteria have a very thin peptidoglycan layer. They stain red in the Gram-stain procedure as they lose the primary stain.
