Question
A 54 kg student carrying an 11 kg backpack climbs up 76 steps (each step is 18 cm high) to the 4th floor , the student fails to pay attention to Mr. Caldwell’s and Dr.Burtons lab safety instructions and accidentally falls out the window with her backpack while chasing a dodgeball, If all her potential energy turns into kinetic energy , what is her velocity just before she hits the ground ?
Expert Solution
Step 1

Answer:-

Mass of a student (m1) = 54 kg

Mass of the backpack (m2) = 11 kg

Total mass (M) = (54 kg) + (11 kg) = 65 kg

Total distance travelled (h) = 76 × 18

h = 1368 cm = 1368/100 = 13.68 m

Acceleration due to gravity (g) = 9.8 m/s2

We know that

Potential energy (P.E) = M g h

P.E = 65 × 9.8 × 13.68

P.E = 8714.16 J

By question

All her  potential energy turns into kinetic energy

Therefore

P.E = K.E

8714.16 = (1/2) M V2

8714.16 × 2 = 65 × V2

17428.32 = 65 × V2

V2 = (17428.32)/(65)

V2 = 268 .13

V = (268.13)1/2
