In 2011, the population of the world was estimated to be about 7 billion. How many people in the world could theoretically have the same DNA fingerprint?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fingerprinting is also called DNA typing It is the technique that compares unknown sample to known samples of DNA This technique is used to identify culprits and to resolve parental disputes.

The DNA fingerprinting is based on patterns of genetic material that is unique in almost every individual. The unique repetitive sequences of DNA are called mini satellites or Variable number tandem repeats (VNTRS). Thus, the VNTRs are used in DNA fingerprinting to identify the culprit.

VNTR is a short nucleotide sequence which is organized in tandem repeats in a genome. These sequences length varies from individual to individual. These are highly specific sequences hence their analysis is used in genetics, forensics, and DNA fingerprinting.

VNTRs are classified majorly into two types based on their length as microsatellites and mini satellites. The microsatellites are 5 base pairs in length while, mini satellites are longer blocks.
