Net primary productivity of two mangrove forest stands on the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka Productivity studies were carried out from September, 1985 to August, 1987 in two mangrove stands, i.e. estuarine and island fringing, in Dutch bay, a lagoon situated on the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka. Net above-ground primary productivity was measured by monitoring litterfall and above- ground biomass increment. The average annual rate of litterfall in the estuarine and island-fringing -2 and 407 g m respectively. The average annual rates of above in the estuarine stands and 287 g m mangrove stands are 588 gm ground woody growth are 615 g m mangrove stands. Hence estuarine mangrove stands record a higher annual rate of above-ground net primary production (NPP; 1203 g m ) than the fringing mangrove stands (694 g m rate of NPP in the water front zones of the stands (1300 g m' -2 -2 in the island-fringing -2). The annual -2 in the estuarine stands and 875 g m -2 in the fringing stands) are greater than those in the back mangrove zones (115 g m in the estuarine stands and 514 g m differences in tidal flushing and influence of freshwater in the two localities. -2 in the island-fringing stands). These variations may be attributed to the Based on the information in the abstract, which of the following state ments is false: O productivity in above-ground biomass increment is greater in the estuarine stand than the island fringing stand

Step 1
Gross primary productivity refers to carbon fixation amount by all the producers present in the given ecosystem during photosynthesis. However, it is not the correct estimate of energy harnessed by the producers as a large amount of energy is lost during respiration. When this part is eliminated from the gross primary productivity, it is known as net primary productivity.
