Now that you know a little bit about how mitosis relates to cancer, it’s your turn to propose a cancer treatment that works to stop defective cells from dividing but doesn’t interfere with non-cancerous cells from dividing.  Several of the newer chemotherapies that have come out in the last decade or so are designed with this in mind so you aren’t necessarily designing something completely new,  but I want you guys to think about how you might do that if you were the one developing the drug.   You should think not only about mitosis but cell structure and function as well.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The most common type of cell division is mitosis. Mitosis is used for the cell growth and repair. During this process a cell produces exact copy of itself and divides into two new daughter cells. Mitosis is controlled by genes present inside the every cell. Sometimes this control goes wrong and the process of cell division goes out of control. Cells that are produced by this uncontrolled cell division are known as cancerous cells. These cells continue to replicate rapidly without control that normal cells have. These cancer cells form lumps or tumors that affect the surrounding tissues and damage them. Sometimes these cancer cells detach from the original tumor and spread to other tissues and organs of the body through blood circulation. Spreading of tumor to other body parts is known as metastasis.

Step 2

Medicines used in the treatment of cancer are sometimes aimed to destroy the cells that are dividing rapidly by mitosis. These medicines inhibit the function or synthesis of the DNA and this treatment is known as chemotherapy. Some other medicines can also be used to treat cancer in different ways.

Step 3

There are many types of cancer. It depends on which type of cells were the original that begin to divide out of control. It means that there is not only one treatment for the cancer. Treatment of cancer may include medications, radiopathy, and a combination of surgery. Some different ways to treat cancer:

  • A type of breast cancer which is influenced by the estrogen hormone can be treated by the hormone therapy. This therapy blocks the synthesis or action of the estrogen hormone.
  • By blocking the growth signals to the cancerous cells, cancer can be treated without interfering the non-cancerous cells.
  • Medications that block the growth of new blood vessels in the tumors can be used to treat cancer. This process effectively starves the cancerous cells for the nutrients they require for their growth.
