Procedure:
1. Calibrate an eyedropper by carefully counting the number of drops it takes to fill a
10 ml graduated cylinder to the 2.0 ml mark. Hold the dropper vertical and do not
touch the sides of the cylinder. Repeat the measurement twice and take the average
of the three values. Divide the 2 ml by the average number of drops to obtain the
VOLUME (ml) PER DROP. Use this calibrated dropper for the titration later.
2. Put 80 ml of pink tap water-phenolphthalein solution (to be prepared by the
instructor) in a 100 ml graduated cylinder and carefully add a small fish. Record
volume of the fish and note the starting time.
3. Pour the contents into a clean plastic cup. Put 80 ml of the same solution into
another flask to serve as the reference.
4. Observe the color of the solution in the experimental flask against a white
background. If the solution becomes clear in less than 30 minutes, terminate the
experiment and record the elapsed time. If it hasn't cleared by 30 minutes, terminate
it then. Carefully remove the fish and return to its proper place.
5. If solution remains pink, add 0.01N sulfuric acid dropwise using your calibrated
dropper to both reference and experimental flask until solution clears. Record
number of drops in the table.
6. Make 3 trials. Use different fish in every trial.
