Press a piece of sticky tape, about 15-20 cm in length, firmly onto a smooth unpaintedsurface, for example, a notebook or an unpainted tabletop. (For case in handling, make“handles” by folding cacti end of the tape to form portions that are not sticky.) Then peel thetape off the table and hang it from a support (e.g., g wooden dowel or the edge of a table).
Describe the behavior of the tape as you bring objects toward it (e.g., a hand, a pen).

- Roofs are sometimes pushed off vertically a tropical cyclone, and buildings sometimes explode outward when hit by a tornado. Use Bernoulli’s principle to explain these phenomena.arrow_forwardYou can break a strong wine bottle by pounding a cork into it with your fist, but the cork must press directly against the liquid filling the bottle—there can be no air between the cork and liquid. Explain why bottle breaks only if is no air between the cork and liquid.arrow_forwardBecause atmospheric pressure is about 105 N/m2 and the area of a persons chest is about 0.13 m2, the force of the atmosphere on ones chest is around 13 000 N. In view of this enormous force, why dont our bodies collapse?arrow_forward
- Give an example of entrainment not mentioned in the text.arrow_forwardCheck Your understanding Repeat ExampIe12.4 assuming that the forearm is object of uniform density that weighs 8.896 N.arrow_forwardThe greatest ocean depths on Earth are found in the Marianas Trench near the Philippines. Calculate the pressure due to ocean at bottom of this trench, given its depth is 11.0 km and assuming density of seawater is constant all way down.arrow_forward
- How is pressure related to sharpness of a knife its ability to cut?arrow_forwardThe true weight of an object can be measured in a vacuum, where buoyant forces are absent. A measurement in air, however, is disturbed by buoyant forces. An object of volume V is weighed in air on an equal-arm balance with the use of counterweights of density . Representing the density of air as air and the balance reading as Fg, show that the true weight Fg is Fg=Fg+(v-Fgg)airgarrow_forwardWhen a glass bottle full of vinegar warms up, both the vinegar and the glass expand, but the vinegar expands significantly more with temperature than does the glass. The bottle will break if it is filled up to its very tight cap. Explain why and how a pocket of air above the vinegar prevents the bottle from breaking.arrow_forward
- A dam is used to hold back a river. The dam has a height H=12m and a width W=10m . Assume that density of the water is p=1000kg/m3 . (a) Determine be net force on tie dam. (b) Why does the thickness of be dam increase with?arrow_forwardHow do jogging on soft ground and wearing padded shoes reduce the pressures to which the feet and legs are subjected?arrow_forwardVerify that flow of oil is laminar for an oil gusher that shoots crude oil 25.0 m into the air through a pipe with a 0.100-m diameter. The vertical pipe is 50 m long. Take the density of the oil to be 900 kg/m3 and its viscosity to be 1.00(N/m2)s (or 1.00Pas ).arrow_forward
