In an experiment examining vitamin C as a cold treatment, students with cold symptoms who visited the campus medical center either received vitamin C or were treated with over-the-counter drugs. Students then reported on the length and severity of their colds. Both the students and the clinic health providers knew which treatment students were receiving. This study indicated that vitamin C significantly reduced the length and severity of colds. Which factors make this result somewhat unreliable?

- A black belt has identified the following key input (X) andoutput (Y) variables for the process of laundering yourclothes in your washing machine at home:Develop a cause-and-effect diagram for this process ofwashing clothes. Next develop a cause-and-effect matrixand use your own insight and judgment about the processto rank and weight the output (Y ) variables, assign anumerical score to each X-Y combination, develop overallscores for each X variable, and then rank the X variables interms of importance.arrow_forwardHypertension (commonly called high blood pressure) is a growing public health problem in Uganda. Researchers want to investigate the association between alcohol consumption and hypertension among rural men in Kaabong district of Uganda. a) What is the justification and significance of conducting such a study? b) Sate a suitable general research question and objective for this study. c) Using the research question, state the dependent and independent variables (including the indicators) for your study. d) Draw a conceptual framework to explain your variables. e) Assume that the researchers will conduct a community based survey. How many participants should be included in the study in order to achieve a 95% confidence level if an error of 5% would be allowable and the estimated proportion of people with hypertension is 20%? f) Provide a COVID 19 management plan as you intend to collect data from the community. g) What kind of literature would you look out for? h) Provide a detailed…arrow_forwardResearchers found that people who used candy cigarettes as children were more likely to become smokers as adults, compared to people who did not use candy cigarettes as children. a) Identify the explanatory variable and identify the response variable. b) Based on the short description above, do you think the findings were a result of an Observational Study or a Designed Experiment? Explain your thinking. c) When explaining this study to one of my classes,, a student of mine said: “But isn’t the smoking status of the person’s parents a confounding variable here?” Describe what it means for smoking status to be a confounding variable that provides an alternative to drawing a cause-and-effect explanation in this context.arrow_forward
- 2) You design an experiment in which you have your subject consume caffeine (coffee) and then evaluate whether or not you see an increase in their heart rate. In your experiment, what is the dependent variable? a) the weight of the test subject b) the time it takes to consume the coffee c) HR d) caffeinearrow_forwardFor your summer research project, you decide to repeat Lillian Tuttle’s (2017) experiment testing the effect of lionfish on other fish that are cleaners and clients. You do this new experiment at a new location (Bonaire), but use basically the same experimental approach and BACI design as Tuttle. a) You do not separate resident and transient clients (as Tuttle did), and below is a graph of your results showing the effect of the treatment on the total density of client fish in the community. Please explain your result. Imagine that you are planning to publish your experiment and that your answer to this question will be part of the “Results” section of your paper. Please do not worry about hypothetical statistical tests; just assume that the obvious patterns displayed in the graph can be interpreted at face value.arrow_forwardWhat is the result of damage to relative biological effectiveness?arrow_forward
- How would knowledge of a disease type and general physiology assist in the design of a medical device for an endovascular application? Provide reasons for your answer.arrow_forwardIn double-blind studies neither the test subject or the researcher knows who was given the drug and who was given the control. Why are these studies effective for testing a drug that may elevate mood and relieve feelings of depression? Since there are two symptoms that are affected, a double-blind study is required. Double-blind studies are ways to ensure that only the researcher can figure out who is getting the effective drug. Double-blind studies are the most economical way to gather results from testing on humans. The patients and researchers are not given this information so they cannot be influenced in reporting the effectiveness.arrow_forwardWhich of the following examples will have longer lasting physiological responses to drug: Group of answer choices A.increase in heart rate following adrenaline infusion B.changes in gene product formation following corticosteroid injectionarrow_forward
- Homeostasis is a natural phenomenon which is body’s tendency to maintain internal stable and favorable environment against any situation that would tend to disturb its normal condition and function. Such as, If the temperature rises, the body loses heat by sweating or panting, via the latent heat of evaporation. If it falls, this is counteracted by increased metabolic action, by shivering and in fur or feather coated animals, by thickening the coat. Like temperature our body can sense the change in osmolarity and to maintain a stable condition body needs to persist on a certain osmolarity. Secretion of certain hormones can be stimulated by any change in the osmolarity to help maintain a certain level of osmolarity - briefly discuss the mechanism of action and biochemical function of such a hormone.arrow_forwardA footwear company wants to test the effectiveness of its new insoles (soft insole and air-fill insole) designed to prevent shin splints resulting from running. They hire a group of physical trainers and a statistician, who recruits 100 healthy adult runners with the same age range to participate in a study. The statistician randomly assigns the 60 runners to follow the se weekly running schedule, wherein 30 runners will use new insoles and the remaining 30 will use the existing insoles the company already sells. After 10 weeks, the statistician records the number of runners from each group that has developed shin splints. They made sure that the results are valid that they have performed the testing three times for each treatment. Illustrate the type of research design used in the situation. Show how the samples were assigned to the treatments.arrow_forwardYou are removing a hot pan of cookies from the oven, using a pot holder. Suddenly, you feel a surge of heat through the pot holder.
