Question
Chapter 19, Problem 19.119SP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The balanced chemical equation for the overall cell reaction of a nickel-cadmium battery needs to be determined when it is producing current.
Concept introduction:
Nickel-cadmium batteries also represented as ni-cad batteries are known for their use in calculators and other portable power tools. They are different from other dry-cell batteries as they are rechargeable.
In this battery, cadmium metal acts as an anode and nickel (III) in compound NiO(OH) acts as cathode. These batteries are rechargeable because in the electrode reactions the solid product is formed which adhere to the surface of the electrodes.
