Concept explainers
If you suspected that heterozygous carriers of a particular disease gene had a selective advantage in resisting a type of infection, how would you go about testing that hypothesis?
To determine: The way for testing of the hypothesis that the heterozygous carriers of a particular disease may have a differential advantage in resisting a particular type of infection.
Introduction: Allele refers to a pair of genes present on a chromosome. Alleles can exist as homozygous or heterozygous pairs. Heterozygous is a term used when different alleles of particular genes are present.
Explanation of Solution
Genetic testing will help in gathering information or evidence concerning the hypothesis that the frequency of an allele of a specific genome is advantageous over the other in a given population.
In order to find out whether a particular gene is responsible for causing disease, has an advantage over the other, genetic testing is performed. In this type of testing, various samples of both the indigenous and non-indigenous population are collected and analyzed. The survival rate and reproduction rate of both of the populations are analyzed.
Another way is to conduct experiments on model organisms that are heterozyogous and homozygous carriers. Expose the heterozygous and homozygous carriers of both the populations to a particular disease, and then analyze both the groups for their survival and reproduction rates.
Hence, genetic testing and experimentation on model organisms are ways for testing the hypothesis that heterozygous carriers for a specific disease had a selective advantage in infection certain type of infection.

- Would you consider the “smoking-lung cancer relationship” as an example of the biological plausibility concept? Why?arrow_forwardIn the early part of this century, tropical medicine expert Dr. Richard P. Strong obtained permission from the Governor-General of the Philippines to inoculate a number of criminals with plague bacillus. The Filipino prisoners were not asked for their consent, but they were rewarded by being provided with cigars and cigarettes (Pahl:284). Discuss the ethics of this experiment. Discuss the moral issue of informed consent. Why is it so important in medical research and experimentations? What are some of the circumstances that make it difficult to obtain? Why is there a need for human experimentation?arrow_forwardIt appears that infection by Plasmodium is negative for Anopheles. We also showed in class that the mosquito immune system can be upregulated to limit or terminate Plasmodium infection of these mosquitoes. So why don’t we see natural selection to upregulate the mosquito’s immune system and get rid of that parasite? Best explanation. Upregulating the immune system comes at the cost of shortening life span and thus (most probably) reproductive success Having a Plasmodium infection is negative for the mosquito, but it protects against much worse pathogens Upregulation of the immune system in Plasmodium leads to more rapid development of Plasmodium, causing even greater problems for Anopheles Statement is wrong. This upregulation was done with genetic engineering in a lab. Alleles to do something like that do not exist in naturearrow_forward
- Which of these statements about the virulence of rabbit myxoma virus is TRUE?A. Rabbit myxoma virus needed to become less virulent so it could coexist with its rabbit hosts.B. Directional selection favored a coevolutionary escalation where resistance evolved in rabbits and less virulence evolved in the virus.C. Rabbit myxoma virus became less virulent over time because natural selection favored strains that did not immediately kill the rabbit hosts, enhancing the likelihood of spreading and infecting other rabbits.D. None of the above is a true statement.arrow_forwardThree methods have been used to try to eliminate malaria. One is to eliminate the mosquito vectors of the parasite, a second is to kill the parasites after they have entered the human body, and the third is to develop a vaccine against the parasite, allowing the human immune system to provide protection from the disease. Which do you suppose is the most promising in the long run? Why? Think about both the biology of the disease and the efficacy of carrying out each of the methods on a large scale .arrow_forwardIn the 1940s, the U.S. government was looking for a solution to a medical problem: the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among soldiers. Several now-infamous government-funded studies used human subjects to research common STDs and treatments. In one such study, American researchers intentionally exposed more than 1300 human subjects in Guatemala to syphilis, gonorrhea, and chancroid to determine the ability of penicillin and other antibiotics to combat these diseases. Subjects of the study included Guatemalan soldiers, prisoners, prostitutes, and psychiatric patients—none of whom were informed that they were taking part in the study. 1) What type of Epidemiological Study does this fall under; Descriptive, Analytical, Retrospective, Observational, or Prospective. 2) Please explain why this study was ethical or unethical. 3) We discussed a similar tragic but famous study that happened in the U.S. (it took place in Alabama) in one of our lectures. Some general changes within these three factors that may cause an infectious disease to emerge include: A. changes in populations or behavior of reservoir hosts or intermediate hosts B. microbial genetic mutation and viral genetic recombination or assortment C. environmental factors such as an increase in precipitation D. all of the above E. none of the abovearrow_forward

Dr. Zikry is quoted as saying: “It’s become very clear to me what a socioeconomic disease this is...”. In addition, the textbook discusses the personal variables and socioeconomic status (SES) that are used to find patterns in disease (pp.112-118). What do you think Dr. Zikry meant by referring to the SES of his patients? Why was it important to find a pattern of personal variables and SES among the of victims of Covid-19 at the beginning of the pandemic?arrow_forward
