The B&E Cooling Technology Company, a maker of automobile air conditioners, faces an impending deadline to phase out the traditional chilling technique, which uses chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), a family of refrigerant chemicals believed to attack the earth's protective ozone layer. B&E has been pursuing other means of cooling and refrigeration. As a near-term solution, its engineers recommend a cooling technology known as an absorption chiller, which uses plain water as a refrigerant and semiconductors that cool down when charged with electricity. B&E is considering two options:1 Option 1: Retrofit the plant now to adopt the absorption chiller and continuing to be a market leader in cooling technology.2 Option 2: Defer the retrofit until the federal deadline, which is three yearsaway. With expected improvement in cooling technology and technical knowhow, the retrofitting cost will be cheaper then. But there will be tough market competition, and revenues would be less than…
Coast Corporation's research and development department has a a project to develop a
new product which is expected to be very profitable. However, this very expensive

- The Stone River Textile Mill was inspected by OSHA and found to be in violation of a number of safety regulations. The OSHA inspectors ordered the mill to alter some existing machinery to make it safer (e.g., add some safety guards); purchase some new machinery to replace older, dangerous machinery; and relocate some machinery to make safer passages and unobstructed entrances and exits. OSHA gave the mill only 35 weeks to make the changes; if the changes were not made by then, the mill would be fined $300,000. - Russell Forest Products Limited needed to upgrade a burner at its sawmill in Cochrane, Ontario, to comply with the new air pollution standards. The new burner, which is used to burn the scrap wood from its sawing operations, will not only reduce the amount of pollution, but will supply heat for the plant facility, including the wood dryer. In order to encourage Russell Forest Products Limited in its compliance with the stan- dards, the Province of Ontario extended an interest-free loan of $400,000 on December 31, 2011. The only conditions in obtaining the interest-free loan are that the loan proceeds be applied directly to the construction costs and that the loan be repaid in full on December 31, 2019. RussellForest Products Limited borrowed the remaining funds from the bank for the construction of the burner and will be paying interest at the rate of 7% per year. Electroplating uses large amounts of water and chemicals, producing wastewater with a number of toxic residuals. Currently, Heaps uses settlement tanks to remove waste; unfortunately, the approach is inefficient, and much of the toxic residue is left in the water thatis discharged into a local river. The amount of toxic discharge exceeds the legal, allowable amounts, and the company is faced with substantial, ongoing environmental fines. The environ-mental violations are also drawing unfavorable public reaction, and sales are being affected. A lawsuit is also impending, which could prove to be quite costly. Management is now considering the installation of a zero-discharge, closed-loop system totreat the wastewater. - As a cost accountant for San Francisco Cannery, you have been approached by Phil Perriman, canning room supervisor, about the 2020 costs charged to his department. In particular, he is concerned about the line item “depreciation.” Perriman is very proud of the excellent condition of his canning room equipment. He has always been vigilant about keeping all equipment serviced and well oiled. He is sure that the huge charge to depreciation is a mistake; it does not at all reflect the cost of minimal wear and tear that the machines have experienced over the last year. He believes that the charge should be considerably lower. The machines being depreciated are six automatic canning machines. All were put into use on January 1, 2020. Each cost $625,000, having a salvage value of $55,000 and a useful life of 12 years. San Francisco depreciates this and similar assets using double-declining-balance depreciation. Perriman has also pointed out that if you used straight-line depreciation, the…arrow_forwardou have been hired as a consultant for Pristine Urban-Tech Zither, Inc. The company bought some land three years ago for $2.1 million in anticipation of using it as a toxic waste dump site but has recently hired another company to handle all toxic materials. Based on a recent appraisal, the company believes it could sell the land for $2.3 million on an after-tax basis. In four years, the land could be sold for $2.4 million after taxes. The company also hired a marketing firm to analyze the zither market, at a cost of $125,000. An excerpt of the marketing report is as follows: The zither industry will have a rapid expansion in the next four years. With the brand name recognition that PUTZ brings to bear, we feel that the company will be able to sell 3,600, 4,300, 5,200, and 3,900 units each year for the next four years, respectively. The chemical engineers are considering alternatives for supplying additional propylene to the polypropylene productionfacility.
