Question
Chapter 36.5, Problem 1QC
Summary Introduction
To explain: The way by which portal hypertension cause varices and promote the formation of ascites.
Concept introduction: Portal hypertension is a condition in which blood pressure of the portal venous system is abnormally high due to the resistance in blood flow. In portal hypertension, the blood pressure increases to at least 10mm Hg, whereas the normal pressure of the system is 3mm Hg. When this condition (long-term portal hypertension) continues, it causes many pathophysiological problems such as varices, splenomegaly, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, and hepatopulmonary syndrome.
