Chapter 7, Problem 7PQ
Model the Moon’s orbit around the Earth as an ellipse with the Earth at one focus. The Moon’s farthest distance (apogee) from the center of the Earth is rA = 4.05 × 108 m, and its closest distance (perigee) is rP = 3.63 × 108 m.
a. Calculate the semimajor axis of the Moon’s orbit.
b. How far is the Earth from the center of the Moon’s elliptical orbit?
c. Use a scale such as 1 cm → 108 m to sketch the Earth–Moon system at apogee and at perigee and the Moon’s orbit. (The semiminor axis of the Moon’s orbit is roughly b = 3.84 × 108 m.)

A Ferris wheel has a radius of 42.4 feet. The bottom of the Ferris wheel sits 0.8 feet above
the ground. You board the Ferris wheel at the 6 o'clock position and rotate counter-
clockwise.
a. Define a function, f that gives your height above the ground (in feet) in terms of the
angle of rotation (measured in radians) you have swept out from the 6 o'clock
position, a
f(a)-42.4sin(a)+43.2

b. Define a function, g, that gives your height above the ground (in feet) in terms of the
number of feet you have rotated counter-clockwise from the 6 o'clock position, s.

An undiscovered planet, many lightyears from Earth, has one moon in a periodic orbit. This moon takes 1810 × 103 seconds (about 21 days) on average to complete one nearly circular revolution around the unnamed planet. If the distance from the center of the moon to the surface of the planet is 255.0 × 106 m and the planet has a radius of 3.30 × 106 m, calculate the moon's radial acceleration ?c.
