In the article, Let’s Stop Freaking Out About Artificial Intelligence, authors Eric Schmidt and Sebastian Thrun argue that artificial intelligence’s benefits vastly outweigh the consequences, and that it can be used to improve our everyday lives. The authors argue that when one self-driving car makes a mistake, “all of the self-driving cars learn from it” (Schmidt & Thrun 4), implying that self-driving cars are much safer than cars that are driven manually by humans. They claim that since people don’t learn from other people's’ mistakes, hundreds of thousands of people die every year due to traffic accidents because of it. With artificial intelligence, those numbers would vastly decrease and would save hundred of thousands of lives. In addition, the authors take a much more optimistic view of A.I, as they write about how the AI revolution “could free us from menial, repetitive, and mindless work” (Schmidt & Thrun 5), meaning that artificial intelligence can do all of the dirty work for us, while we do the much easier things. Schmidt and Thrun implies that we would be much happier doing the simpler things and not having to worry about possible injuries during their work. They state that artificial intelligence can be used to protect us from identity theft with facial recognition and improve our lives and abilities by harnessing A.I.

We know that robot could also be dangerous for humanity. For example, they may power the autonomous weapons. The autonomous weapons is that killer robot that could pose a threat to all of us, it could hunt and kill without further human involvement. According to the research by Max Erik, an MIT physics professor, artificial intelligence could have benefits things that could help people in some ways, but at the same time, it has dangerous and negative effects that could hurt people. In his article titled ” Benefits & Risks of Artificial Intelligence,” he writes, “Autonomous weapons are artificial intelligence systems that are programmed to kill. In the hands of the wrong person, these weapons could easily cause mass casualties. Moreover, an AI arms race could inadvertently lead to an AI war that also results in mass casualties.” Here, Erik emphasis that artificial intelligence might be programmed to do something devastating that hurt people’s life and increase the violence. Also, we know that the autonomous weapon can take people's lives away if it is controlled by wrong people who want to spread hate and killing people. As I was listening to Harris’ speech, I noticed that a lot of what he had to say matched my latest thoughts about AI. Harris mentioned that the most worrisome thing about the development of AI at this point is that people seem unable to arrange an appropriate response to the dangers that may come from AI. I agree with Harris because I have noticed that when I have a conversation about AI with someone, most people don’t know much about it to gather and create an emotional response to it, and the people that do know some information about AI seem to not really feel threatened by it.
