Argumentative Essay On Standardized Testing

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 was put into place to provide extra money for children who do not have money while trading their knowledge using their test scores. The NCLB Act says that students are to be given yearly tests along with yearly report cards to track how well they are doing in school, in doing so, school is not about fun and socializing but now it is all business. These tests not only do not help the students learn but puts a load of stress on their shoulders, alongside that the tests have no purpose other than grading how well a students is able to retain information.

To many students standardized testing has become another part of schooling that is dreaded. Standardized testing has been a part of school since the nineteen-thirties; in those days it was used as a way to measure students that had special needs. Since the time that standardized test have been in American schools there has been many programs that have placed an importance on the idea of standardized testing such as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (Evans 1). Over the years the importance of standardized testing has increased tremendously and so has the stakes, not only for teachers but also students. Standardized testing has been ruling over the lives of students, making or breaking them in their education without fair judgement. Tests like the SAT and the ACT count for way too much when applying to colleges, which in turn limits the student 's capabilities to thrive in an environment that would benefit them. There are many problems within a standardized test that deems them to be unreliable as a true test of knowledge. Although designed to test groups of students on intelligence, standardized testing neglects to fairly acknowledge the abilities of each unique student which reflect their true capabilities.

Students are overwhelmed with school, work, extra-curricular activities, family, etc. Perhaps standardized tests are a major contributor to students’ stress. A standardized test is any test scored in a consistent manner and requires test-takers to answer identical questions. Among the most common include the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Test (ACT). According to the article “Standardized Testing Has Negatively Impacted Public Schools” from Opposing Viewpoints in Context, the beginnings of standardized tests occurred during World War I when the American Psychological Association developed a “ground-administered test” to eliminate inefficient recruits (Solley 3). Today, standardized tests are necessary for college admission. Just last month, in March of 2016, College Board, the non-profit organization responsible for administering the SAT, altered the format of the test. It is now formatted more similar to the ACT and includes an optional essay reducing the score from 2400 to 1600. Many advocates argue standardized tests accurately measure academic intelligence and hold teachers and schools accountable. In today’s society, standardized tests have become the norm, and unfortunately, people overlook their negative effects despite research substantiating arguments about their disadvantages. Standardized tests are disadvantageous because they hinder education and contain bias.

These formal exams test both what has learned and what the teacher has taught. Unfortunately, they accomplish neither. A well known fact about standardized tests is that a typical student can take the same test twice and, each time, and receive different scores. This past year, In fact, I found myself taking the ACT test 3 times before I got a score I was satisfied with. However, the accuracy of such a test is questionable. Additionally, if you were to look on the shelves of a library, you will find a selection of books on preparation for each different standardized tests including ACT, SAT, AP Testing, GED to name a few. The point of each of these being how to prepare yourself. Logically, the best way to prepare for a test should be to study the included material. However, this idea no longer applies. Success on standardized tests involves students practicing ways to control their abundant stress and utilize their short given amount of time for every section or helpful tactics for memorization. Performance on the tests depends less and less on an existing knowledge than it does on an ability to beat the system. The anxiety, distraction, and emotional distress play a great number into a student’s ability to perform well as he or she sits to complete the test. Under this unhealthy pressure, the odds are completely against them. In spite of promising intellect and determination, the most efficient learner can fail. Like most things in academics, I just knew that the standardized test were just donkey manure and additional gatekeepers to the system. Sure there are waivers, but the fact that you have to pay for them, especially for something because college requires is foolish. Should you be applauded for doing well on them? Most definitely. But it’s like having to pay and being required to take a swimming test, which can only test how well you can swim, how fast, and how many form. But if you’re not a swimmer but a basketballer or a footballer or whatever your gift is, then you’ll be penalized for not performing as well. The point is, we’re inadequately being tested on forms that do not measure all correctly and yet have been indoctrinated in the same system or requirements that was only adopted in the 1960’s when the University of California system signed on to it. Furthermore, standardized tests like the SAT/ACT is more of a measurement of class than anything else. As of this writing, I come to find that many more colleges have dropped that requirement, but still, the fact that so many students spend so much wasted time paying and studying for it, like I did, makes me shake my head. Students shouldn’t be measured by what they get on standardized test since it doesn’t show other things that the students are good at. The author wrote, “ Contrary to popular assumptions about standardized testing, the tests do a poor job of measuring student achievement. They fail to measure such important attributes as creativity and critical thinking skills.” (Opposing viewpoints in Context pg.1) The author’s main argument is that standardized tests do not show the other skill that students, schools or programs have that isn’t shown just through a test. That Standardized testing doesn’t effectively measure the achievement of students. In his or her article, the author puts what achievement is but what is based on standardized test and not other things. A lot of attributes are not measured from the standardized tests. There are some places that have rewards for “shallow thinking” (Opposing viewpoints Pg.3)

Oh no…it’s happening. Anxiety and the eventual memory loss of the material strikes and suddenly we don’t know what to do. Standardized tests have been feared for years and it doesn’t seem like the fear is going away any time soon. Standardized test scores shouldn’t be taken seriously because they fail to successfully measure the knowledge and achievements, can ruin students plans for higher education and can place unnecessary stress on college bound students.

Since 1805 public schools have been the backbone of many Americans and their strive for an education. On top of this, public schools, according to the Huffington Post, equate to 91% or 50.7 million of those attending pre-Kindergarten through the 12th grade. But, with other school types such as year-round attending over 2 million students, the question begs, “Which school type provides their students with the best education”?

Standardized testing has been around since the late 1700s (“Standardized Testing”). For many years, College Board has emphasized standardized testing, which includes ACT and SAT, in students. Colleges use the test scores to make faster decisions about acceptance. Although standardized testing has made the application process easier for colleges, it is not the best process for students; therefore, standardized tests should not be used to make decisions regarding college acceptance.

If someone was to ask you “how do you define student achievement?” what would your answer be? Would you say student achievement is measured by state achievement tests? Or would you say that student achievement is too complex a subject to be objectively measured? There are many important skills students must be taught, and we need a way to effectively measure if they are in fact learning those skills. However, standardized tests cannot effectively show the learning of all students, especially those that are not good test takers. And of those skills that are tested, there are an endless number of arguably more important skills that aren’t being valued because they cannot be calculated. Furthermore,

Tomorrow was the big day. The day that every student despised, but came every year. The problem that transcends national borders: standardized testing. Before I knew it, it was the final week, and time was running out. In my case, the Connecticut state test, the CMT, was in just two days. More than nervousness, there was a cloud of confusion surrounding this test for us students. Some said that preparation and study are necessary for this test, while most thought just the opposite. Some people were even saying that the scores for these tests somehow will affect our progress in school. Looking back, I don’t remember the test being all that hard, but it didn’t make sense to me. How could this one test, filled with questions that require shallow thinking and zero creativity, show the state the performance of my hard-working teachers, or the individuality and strengths of each student? Or on a larger scale, every student in the entire state?

What’s your ACT score? Students are branded with their ACT and SAT scores in society. Today’s education is heavily leaning on standardized tests. An average students takes over one hundred standardized tests in his or her school years. Standardized tests are used to measure and test the knowledge of students in a particular subject in a quick and easy way. These tests are also used to see the extend and skill of students for qualifications of certain colleges and scholarships. Some of these standardized tests include the ACT and the SAT. But do these test fully measure the strength of knowledge these students have practiced for their whole lives? Standardized testing does not allow students to fully and completely show their strength in education and instead results in breaking down students mentally and physically.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of students across the nation are required to take many standardized tests. Which are used to determine student’s achievement, progress and growth. These tests supposedly say the outcome of how much knowledge a student has or has not learned. The stakes are high all because of a test score. Standardized tests may determine a pass or fail status for grade levels through K-12 or admission into colleges if you are taking an ACT or SAT standardized test. It is unfair and a very unreliable method to use to measure the performance of students. Standardized testing methods creates more harm than good and should be revised because many students, teachers, and schools suffer from this annually.

Is there an efficient and effective way of measuring ability? Throughout history, mankind has strived to find a feasible manner of tracking and comparing, their achievements and achievements in knowledge. Recently, this pursuit has led to the popularized use of standardized tests. However, standardized tests are not an effective way of measuring the knowledge of humanity. Although, if used properly, they can reflect the gathered information, it is not always correct.
