BACKGROUND OF THE UNDERSTUDY PORT
5.1 Introduction
In this chapter, we will discuss on the background of the multipurpose port that has been chosen as an input for case study. Jurong Port is used as a subject from where the actual data were collected between the years of 2010 till 2014. The background also explains the importance of knowing the accurate berth utilization rate in order to reduce the turn-around time of vessels berthing at a multipurpose port where diversified cargo operations being carried out. The subsequent section in this chapter brings brief explanation of the port achievement, goals, facilities, and services provided at the port.
5.2 Background of Jurong Port
Jurong Port Pte Ltd is a leading international multipurpose port operator handling almost all type of cargoes inclusive of the main general, bulk and containerized cargo. Headquartered in Singapore, Jurong Port began operations as a moderate operator handling general and bulk cargo in the year of 1965, with the intention of serving the development needs of Singapore. The port, up to the current statistics, welcomes more than 17000 vessels annually from regionally and internationally (Jurong Port Singapore, 2015a).

My predictions for the Docklands region was there will be retail stores, restaurants and there to be residential areas. The only parts of my predictions that were correct, were the residential areas having many apartment complexes and there being a wide range of restaurants in the area. Although the retail was not the amount I thought there was going to be, even during the surveys we conducted 9 residents mentioned that the retail amenities were poor. For some residents the Docklands region has been created as a liveable and sustainable residential precinct that has all of the amenities needed to survive. After graduation, I plan to become full time at my career place of employment the NY/NJ Port Authority. I plan to transfer to their advertising department, and gain more experience in that area. I will as so be able to save money to work on my independent films and scripts. I would like to apply for entry level positions at a local radio station. The main aspect of Toyota Company’s value chain analysis is the inbound logistics. Inbound logistics use JIT (Just-in-Time) system of production as it decreases the inventory cost. JIT helps Toyota to optimize their assembling and production process as well as to minimize parts going to waste or getting unused as inventory.
