What Caused the Civil War? Many people think that the Civil War was fought only because of slavery. Could other things have contributed to the cause of war? The Civil War was a four year battle between the Union and the Confederacy. There were many events that may have helped lead America in the war. These events include: economic issues, cultural and social issues, and political issues. The first cause of the Civil War were economic issues. The south, not being as industrialized as the north, couldn’t make their own basic supplies. Therefore, they had to rely on the north. The only thing the could trade in exchange for supplies was cotton (Document 1). The south also relied on their slaves for income. The cotton that was grown was picked by the slaves. This slave-picked cotton was the only thing that really made them money (Document 3). Overall, the north was far more advanced than the south. They didn’t rely on anyone else, like the south relied on them. The only thing the south was superior at was slave population and cotton bales (Document 2). These economic issues that the south faced was one cause of the Civil War. …show more content…
Independence Day has been a very celebrated American holiday for many years. However, in the 1800s, we enslaved our own people. As “the land of the free” (a lyric in our nation anthem), abolitionists wanted America to be true to that title and rid of slavery (Document 4). The hit novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, painted a clear picture of how cruel slavery really was. This enraged the south, making statements such as “The Negro slaves of the South are the happiest, and, in some sense, the freest people in the world,” (Document 5). These two social and cultural events caused conflict between the north and south and contributed to the cause of
The industrial advancement of the Northern states and the farming culture of the Southern states was one of the most significant causes to the Civil War. As shown in Document A of our Document Based Questions packet, the railroad systems of the North allowed early advancements in manufacturing
The Civil War was a great deal about slavery. Slavery was overwhelmingly the cause for example, the "states' right" always mentioned seems to have been the right to have slaves. IMHO. If you wanted to stop the war you needed to stop slavery.
The political turmoils of nineteenth century America gave way to a massive Civil War which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. The United States were divided geographically and ideologically. The North was an industrial powerhouse based on (relatively) free labor that focused on factories and manufactures. In its economy it had no need for slaves and was dead set against the very institution of slavery. On the other hand, the south was the agricultural center of the U.S.A. and relied heavily on a large slave population to do most of the manual labor. The election of 1860 pitted these two different world views against each other. The pro slavery Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge and the abolitionist Republican Abraham Lincoln were
The Civil War happened due to the many differences between the North and the South. For example economic, social, cultural and political differences. These all helped lead America to a Civil War. But to an extent, the most important cause was the fact there were many disagreements with states' rights versus federal rights.
The overall reason of the Civil War was through the separation between the South and the North. The North was industrializing at an incredible rate. The South was resisting industrialization in favor of their plantation lifestyle. The North was modernizing much faster which accelerated "enlightened" thinking. There were tens of thousands of railroads built in the U.S., with over 90% of them being built in the North. Both the North and the South believed in a different type of lifestyle and economy. Although, Fort Sumter was the main cause of the Civil War, root causes are the reason that the Civil War developed such as the debate of slavery, Industry vs. Farming, and election and presidency of Abraham Lincoln.

It can be inferred that the Confederate states fought for slavery, as it is a major part of their arguments. While the entire Confederacy ratified the Ordinance of Secession, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas also created declarations of causes, each state explaining the reasons as to why they were seceding. Additionally, some key leaders to the secession believed that Lincoln was on a warpath and was determined to abolish slavery as those before him had begun the process.
The Civil War didn’t start because of slavery but it did slowly turn about it and is only known for it. The civil war started because trade imbalance in between the north and south. Lincoln did not agree with the practice of slavery and was against it but knew the Border States would not support him. He knew the civil war would be a great way to stop slavery.
Contrary to common misconceptions, the Civil War that occurred from 1861 to 1865 was not about slavery or about African American rights. The war was primarily about the northern desire of economic expansion which was in the way of the southern lifestyle. However, slavery was still a huge part of the war and the African Americans poured blood, sweat and tears into fighting for their rights and gaining their equality. Following the Emancipation Proclamation of 1862, black soldiers were allowed to enlist in the war; however, the circumstances differed in different regions. Numerous slaves were able to escape their horrible lives due to influential figures such as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass who risked their lives in order to free fellow

Do you know the main causes of the Civil War? Well, to start I can tell you this: ‘‘War means fighting, and fighting means killing." ~Nathan Bedford Forrest~ The North and the South had different views on everything, and their economies and ways of living were also drastically different. Over the years, all of the increasing tension between the north and south eventually came to a head in the form of a civil war.
