Do you think there could have been another way to protect the institution of slavery instead of causing war? The Civil War began when the Confederates threatened and attacked the Union soldiers at Fort Sumter, South Carolina on April 12, 1861. The Civil War wasn't necessary for many reasons, there was a peaceful way out, their were many other ways to solve slavery, and young innocent people were dying. There were many different ways to solve slavery that were not the civil war. The slave South could have accepted the fair election of Abraham Lincoln. The free states could have accepted slave codes for the territories. The North abolitionists could have found ways to help the slaves. The Northern states wanted slavery abolished, mean while …show more content…
He believed it was his responsibility as President to apply the laws that would keep the states in the Union even against their will as expressed by democratic conventions and state congress. His policy is ironic and even hypocritical because this position causes serious problems with Lincoln’s own doctrine of the right of revolution that he expressed in Congress on January 12, 1848 during the Mexican War. If there was no war , the Northern abolitionists could have seeked ways to help the slaves in the South, and most likely the Fugitive Slave Law would not have been applied. If all the slave states seceded, then the slaves could have ran away to the Northern states. Lincoln had allowed the South to back away.In the 19th century most nations in the world abolished slavery by peaceful means. The British freed all the captured slaves in their empire in about six years, and ending it in the mid 1840. To some the the Civil war was necessary. The South refused to deal about slavery so they decided to create their own authorization, The Confederate of America. Abraham Lincoln's goal in to starting the war is to create peace between all states and to free the slaves. Most Latin American nations let free all their slaves between 1813 and 1854, and they slowly freed of slaves in Brazil which was completed in 1888. To some people war was the only was to end slavery for
Abraham Lincoln started all that before he was in office, so imagine what he did when he became president of the United States. When Lincoln was elected there was a long series of policy clashes between the South and the North. The clash wasn’t just about slavery. It was a clash of elites. The Northern elite wanted economic expansion. Such as, free land; free labor, free market, and much more. Lincoln had all of this in mind, even the slaves. The slaves saw Lincoln as their ticket to freedom. The South was for slavery, so when they notice Lincoln was trying to abolish slavery they started to secede from the union. Lincoln tried to get some of the states back and more seceded. The confederacy was formed; the civil war was on.
The Civil War was fought from April 12th 1861 to the spring of 1865 in the United States. During the civil war, 62,000 men died fighting in the civil war. It is known for being the most bloodiest war fought in the U.S. The question to this war is, how did it the Civil War start? What were the reason to go to battle and fight each other inside the U.S. The biggest concern about the Civil War was that the Union and the Confederacy had different views of seing how to run their side.
States in the North believed in free labor that emphasized on the inherent dignity of labor and equality among men. The Northern States thought that slavery as an unfair competition since it uses men as to get more money. They also feared that in the future the plantation owners who dominated and controlled the politics in the South may soon threaten democracy which the Northern States enjoyed. It is because of these reasons that the Northern States wanted to end slavery once and for all in America. Slavery was the main cause of the Civil War.
The Civil War was a great deal about slavery. Slavery was overwhelmingly the cause for example, the "states' right" always mentioned seems to have been the right to have slaves. IMHO. If you wanted to stop the war you needed to stop slavery.
The Civil War had revolutionary effects on American society, the most important of which was the destruction of slavery, the fundamental institution of southern society. The emancipation of America’s 4 million slaves, in numbers, scale, and economic value, was far greater than any other emancipation of slaves or serfs (in Russia) in the world. At the war’s beginning, Lincoln identified the North’s cause with the cause of free labor. But Lincoln also initially stated that the conflict was not being fought to end or limit slavery, but to preserve the Union. He wanted to keep the border slave states of Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri in the Union and build the broadest possible base of support for the war in the North.
In the 1800’s people wanted to end slavery, but people had different ideas of how to free them. Some wanted to take an aggressive action and others thought it would be better to be peaceful about it. The historical question states what was the most effective way to free slaves in the US before the civil war: nonviolence or more aggressive action. Some might disagree because they believe that if you don’t follow the 10 commandments then god will be upset. I believe that the most effective way to free slaves was to have a nonviolence action.
There are various issues that led to the secession of the South, and eventually to the American Civil War. From the time period of 1846 to 1860 many things occurred that contributed to the shift to war and the secession of Southern States, but three things that brought forth both the secession and war was The Bleeding of Kansas, John Brown’s Raid, and the election of Abraham Lincoln.
The states rights, the Fugitive slave act, and how the line could not totally hold in which states would be totally free, these slaves had it harsh but the only way to freedom was to the north. Some helping slave made a place to be free and help to get there like the underground railroad. States rights made it so these slaves could have that idea of freedom and liberty in this country. Some abolitionist wanted to free the slaves by peaceful means and some like John Brown did not think so and sought violence to be the key to freedom for these slaves. In 1859 John Brown led an attack on Harper's Ferry, an ammunition camp, he captured this camp and he saw that the only way to free slaves was guns and violence. After he captured the camp and armed some slaves he had to fight a militia and lost, he was hanged three days later. Many things happened because the idea of freedom in the south and slaves mind, especially the underground railroad growing and helping more slaves become free, but sometimes there was no help and so the slaves organized rebellions, one such huge one was Nat Turner's rebellion. Nat’s rebellion was a brutal rebellion, of slaves, going house to house killing plantation owners and freeing more slaves as they went. But as all rebellions end in defeat, there was no revolution and they lost leaving a
The Civil War didn’t start because of slavery but it did slowly turn about it and is only known for it. The civil war started because trade imbalance in between the north and south. Lincoln did not agree with the practice of slavery and was against it but knew the Border States would not support him. He knew the civil war would be a great way to stop slavery.
The civil war was an ugly fight between the North, which was called the Union, they were against slavery, and the South who were called the Confederacy, they were for slavery.
The Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1877, was mainly caused by the diverging society between the North and the South. The North and the South had different goals. There were many factors that led to the war and the chief ones were political and economic differences between the North and the South. The North’s aggression to control the South had led to the point where it was intolerable. The issue on slavery was one of the causes of the Civil War. Slavery and slave trades had become a big part of the South’s economy. The slaves were needed to work on plantations which helped the South prospered. During the 19th Century, the North worked hard on abolishing slavery, which they thought was a disgrace to the Union.
On January 1, 1963, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared all slaves in Confederate controlled areas liberated. The document contained specific details regarding freedom for slaves. Lincoln was quoted saying to the Secretary of State, “If I could save the Union without freeing any slaves, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it; and if I could do it by freeing some slaves, I would also do that.” The latter is what was attained. While it declared slaves free in most Southern states, some select areas were exempted whilst others were not mentioned at all. Lincoln feared that these “border states”, where slavery was legal, would likewise join the Confederacy if they were included in the proclamation. The “border states” had decided to stay in the Union when other southern states seceded in 1861.
Many people believe that the main reason for the Civil War was to end slavery.
As a Republican President, Abraham Lincoln opposed slavery. He believed it was unnecessary to everyone-including Negros and Whites. However, with his stand on slavery, he held back by declaring that he had no reason to disrupt slavery where it existed. The constitution had protected states where citizens wanted slavery to exist. Lincoln knew he would not get enough support and that the four slave-holding states in the North would turn against him. As a result, the Civil War began in 1861 with more of a political purpose in keeping the union together rather than a battle for human freedom. Slaveholders could not turn to the Union’s side because slaves were valuable and played a vital role to
During this time frame The United States consisted of three geographic regions, the north, south, and the west. There was a lot of competition between these regions, the question of whether slavery should be
