Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were two greatest leaders in the fighting of the Civil Rights Movement. Contrary to most American belief, King and Malcolm X were not perfect opposite to each other. However, they do have distinct method to achieve social and economic equality. Malcolm X and King were both civil rights leader during 60s. They had the same goal, which was to achieve social equality for African Americans and Black people. Malcolm X was born in a extremely poor family, which led Malcolm X end up in jail because he sold drug and armed robbed others. In the jail, Malcolm X encountered the teaching of Elijah Muhammad.From then on he was a changed man. Unfortunately, Malcolm was assassinated when he was thirty nine years old.

Dr. Martin Luther King Junior and Malcolm X were the two particular most prevalent, most influential individuals of the Civil Rights Movement. Their tactics, ideologies, childhoods, and ideas of freedom differed in virtually every aspect. The ways in which these men sought transformation in society are where the majority of their differences existed. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a huge proponent for peaceful demonstrations, silent marches, and nonviolent public sit-ins, where he and his supporters made open, unrestricted declarations for equality and integration. His entire philosophy on optimism and love originated from his Baptist roots and was a direct cause of his peaceful, nonviolent upbringing. In contrast, Malcolm X had a turbulent and traumatic childhood that led to a more forceful, direct form of demonstration that never pushed for peace and love and national social harmony. His religion and main area of support, the Nation of Islam, did not believe a simple sit-in or peaceful protest would create a change in society. Instead, he advocated for Black Nationalism, not for integration. Malcolm X encouraged the black community to become autonomous, to function separately from white society. Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. were arguably some of the most important figures in the civil rights era. Malcolm and King had a lot of similar ideas in a way, but also had very different ones.Which is why I believe they shouldn’t be compared as similar to one another. I would like to go over what each of their beliefs and goals were, as well as future goals, and why those two were so important to the movement.

Two different men with similar intentions. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were both activists who wanted to see the advancement of African American people. Both men are significant pieces of history when it comes to the civil rights movement. Their past actions have opened up many doors which are still happening today. Even though they are gone their legacies will always live on because they were the stepping stone for the current activists that we see today. Both Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were profoundly dedicated to the advancement and social equality for African Americans. However, they picked different paths to fulfill their objectives to enfranchise the African American race.

Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X were very influential civil rights advocates during the nineteen-fifties and nineteen-sixties, and continue to have an influence on people today. However, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X have quite different legacies, of which are based on quite different philosophies and tactics. To understand why Dr. King and Malcolm X had drastically different thoughts and approaches to civil rights in the United States, their lives must also be looked at — as their lives leading up to their leadership were drastically different.

     African Americans are fortunate to have leaders who fought for a difference in Black America. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X are two powerful men in particular who brought hope to blacks in the United States. Both preached the same message about Blacks having power and strength in the midst of all the hatred that surrounded them. Even though they shared the same dream of equality for their people, the tactics they implied to make these dreams a reality were very different. The background, environment and philosophy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X were largely responsible for the distinctly varying responses to American racism.

During a time of extreme racial inequality and discrimination, Martin Luther King and Malcolm X both had different backgrounds that affected their theories and philosophies about how to achieve social equality; however, Martin Luther King influenced the African American Civil Rights Movement in a more powerful way.

Without Martin Luther King, there is no Malcolm X. Without Malcolm X, there is no Martin Luther King. There couldn’t have been one without the other. They were complete opposites; they were two of the most different men. Nevertheless, they were fighting for the same thing. They were fighting for the civil rights of African Americans in a country thought to have been based on “freedom” and “equality”. These two men were brave enough to stand up for what they believed in, for what was right. They were brave enough to take on the weight of the responsibility and burdens they were about endure to make what was wrong, right. Equality and fairness among all types of people. Since their deaths in the 60’s no one has been able to fill the shoes that these men wore in striving for the civil rights of African Americans. Both men were ministers and also victims of assassination. They became famous around the same time but, they believed in very different styles of going about how they planned on fighting for these rights. King was a peaceful man. He didn’t believe in violence, he hoped for a day where black and white men could one day call one another brothers. Traditionally, examination of the black Civil Rights movement focuses on the careers of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Dr. King and Malcolm X had very different ideas on how to solve the racial discrimination in America. Dr. King was an integrationist who used non-violent protest to focus the media on the moral wrongs the dominant white society imposed on blacks. Dr. King believed that exposing the outrages of segregation would force the government to mend the system. Malcolm X was a separationist who believed in fighting back when attacked and advocated that the blacks in this country should take what by all means is rightfully theirs. The white system was corrupt, argued Malcolm X, and blacks should start their own system rather than wait for the white society to internally fix theirs.

There are two major leaders during the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X. In this paper I will first be looking at each of these two leaders individually including their backgrounds and what they are most well-known for. Then, I will be looking at the similarities and differences between these two famous leaders.

Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X are notable activists during the civil rights movement in America. They were leaders highly credited by the public. They carried similar, and different views on how to take on oppression in America. “Nonviolence: The Only Road to Freedom” (1966) by Martin Luther King and “The Ballot or the Bullet” (1964) by Malcolm X had points were they agreed with one another, points of controversy were the did not see eye to eye, and points of disagreement about violence in the civil rights movement.

Civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. once said that we, as the people, “...must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” Malcolm X, another famous human rights activist, made a sort of contradictory quotation, remarking that the, “...American Negro has no conception of the hundreds of millions of other non-whites’ concern for him: he has no conception of their feeling of brotherhood for and with him.” As much as these two advocates strive for equality towards both blacks and whites throughout the United States during the rise of civil rights movements in 1960’s and later, they show substantial differentialities on how they push to do so. Each of their mindsets formulates their speeches, causing different messages being made towards their audiences. Martin Luther King, for one, leans more into a powerful, yet peaceful approach towards the people while Malcolm X steps forth on the pedestal of shame and pushed the people to act with a violent outcome. These different approaches and mindsets leads back to none other than their early beginnings itself. It leads back to the lives each one of them endured and the ambitions they were each grown into, all during the time of racial oppression towards African Americans. It leads back to the motivations they were entitled to battle for racial equality, however striving to do so in different mannerisms.

Each of these two leaders had different views on how to go about gaining freedom. While King believed a peaceful means would allow the blacks to achieve equality with the white Americans, Malcolm X took a more pessimistic approach. He believed achieving equality was nearly impossible and preached a more separatist doctrine. Each man's beliefs were formed in their youth.

Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. were both known as civil right leaders in the 1960’s. Both men had a different perspective on civil rights and how civil rights should be won.
