I believe that my effective learning strategies mentioned previously will have a significant impact on my role as a teacher, both as a constructive and a hindering factor. Constructively, my effective learning strategies have proven success for myself in achieving a high academic standard and therefore I will be able to provide insights to students who have similar learning strategies and styles as I have, hence enhancing their learning experience and allowing them to achieve better learning outcome. My effective learning strategies in writing notes may influence my teaching strategy in which I may be more likely to set written tasks for students. This will influence the students to have more writing experience and practice on their writing …show more content…
Due to these learning strategies that I have employed previously, I will be more likely to incorporate these learning strategies in my teaching as these were previously successful for me. However, although these strategies were successful for me, it may not be successful for other students and therefore it could be a hindrance to my development as an effective teacher as I will need to overcome the hurdle to identify the different learning strategy and style of different students and develop my teaching style to suit the needs of the students rather than incorporating my previous learning strategies into my teaching blindly. It will also be important for me to develop a variety of teaching techniques in order to promote interest in students, inclusive and engaging learning environment, and both collaborative and autonomous learning opportunities for …show more content…
It will also be a challenge for me to challenge and question my own beliefs about learning and teaching to shift from a learner's perspective to a teacher's perspective. Some of these influences and challenges are already evident in my teaching experience at a tuition college and it will be a great journey for me to learn and tackle these
This student’s preferred learning strategy compared to the learning strategy provided by V.A.R.K. is almost identical. The learning strategies that have been used throughout her education have always netted good results, which is evident by her grades. In the past other students have commented about her learning style and the amount of time spent on note taking, outlines, and writing out note cards, but she has perfected this process for her learning style.
It is practical to assume that students will do better in tasks that reflect their particular style of learning, so knowledge of students’ learning styles, including a variety of tasks will make teaching more inclusive. A learning style questionnaire could be handed out at the start of a course which, once completed will inform the teacher about the learning styles of the students.
Developing this teaching style does require time and the incorporation of different teaching strategies as well as being able to assess what is effective in my teaching, ensuring that the learners are
i. Understanding the learners learning styles can make my course to be engaging. Flemming (1987) noted three different styles of learning; visual, kinaesthetic and aural. In order to know which method(s) to use to benefit my students the first lesson on my course will centre around discussions on what they already know, the resources they are familiar with, and a learning style questionnaire which will provide me with information on preferred learning styles. Effectiveness can also be enhanced if I adapt my teaching style to give maximum benefit to learners.
It can be argued that the more modalities employed and presented to students, the greater their chance for successful learning becomes. As educators, if we appeal to all strategies of learning, we are more likely to enhance the learning of everyone in our target audience. This may be challenging as we ourselves tend to flock to a particular learning style, and in turn, tend to teach the same way. It also may be a challenge to address each individuals learning style, as it may be difficult, or even impossible to know each and every one of their learning preferences. However, the first step in overcoming that challenge is to be well versed in our own learning preferences. If we are well versed in our own
It could be further argued that to become effective at learning, teachers should strive to encourage all learners to develop a balance of learning styles.
The types of learning strategies were focused on teacher-directed, teacher-facilitated, and learner-directed strategies. Both traditional and active learning principles were incorporated in the plan as well. The Traditional learning principle is focused primarily on teaching the student through a lecture or presentation, which is correlated as a teacher-directed strategy. This strategy is focused primarily on teaching the student through a lecture or
Throughout this last semester, I have been student teaching at Shawswick Middle School where I was able to take a critical look at myself as an educator. Though the teacher and I did not see eye to eye, this disagreement helped me to better form my own pedagogical beliefs and establish confidence in myself as an educator.
My decision to be a teacher did not come easily to me. This choice was dependent on a reflection about what I was passionate about and how I could make a difference. I have chosen to become a teacher, as I believe teachers have the ability to provide future generations the stimulation for one of the most significant roles in life; to become a lifelong learner. Many teachers that I have had during my education have had a positive impact on my decision to grow and develop the skills that are fundamental to pursue a successful teaching career. My aim is to be a part of an honorable profession with the optimism that one day I will become an efficacious teacher who can provide future teachers with inspiration, as my teachers have provided for me. Through personal educational experiences and peer-reviewed academic literature, I am able to shape my approach to my pre-service teaching, as it will influence my future practice. As a teacher, there is not just one singular approach to educating students; there is a need for flexibility, diversity, adaptation and reflection.
I have had very few ‘bad teachers’ throughout my life. In fact, I had only deemed those few as ‘bad’ upon first impression, and this was simply because I knew they would provide me with frequent tests and homework—a challenge essentially. However, those educators became the ones to make the greatest impact on my life, the ones I hold closest to my heart and have shown me how much I desire to become an educator. I yearn to provide others with the same incentive that my teachers have provided me with. Throughout my years in school, I have realized just how important being challenged has been in shaping my persona. I truly love school, for it has always provided me with a sense of purpose. I want to be able to provide others with that same
Therefore, by being admitted into this program, I feel I will be in the right path into becoming a trained teacher with some exposure on how to manage a classroom, work with diverse learnings, learn some pedagogical skills, present and develop lesson plans, and observe teachers. As a future educator, I firmly believe that all children are capable of learning and achieving success through the guidance, dedication, and support from a teacher. My philosophy and teaching styles may change throughout my teaching career, and I want to remain receptive to suggestions and open for improvement. Teaching young minds is a task that cannot be taken lightly. It is full of challenges, frustrations, and responsibilities. However, it is a task that is also full of excitement, wonder, and
The learning strategy developed and taught to a class of students with learning disabilities was how to ask for help. The acquisition of students learning to ask for help is important to obtain current knowledge of this strategy through a pretest. The pretest in this case includes questions. Examples of the questions being asked to the students with learning disabilities are; How many students ask for help when they need it? Yes or No?,How many know what asking for help means? Yes or No?,Are you comfortable asking for help? Yes or No?. By answering these questions it allows me as the teacher to get an understanding of if the students fully understand what asking for help is and if there are reasons they are not taking advantage of this.
In this paper I will be discussing the different types of learning styles and which ones I can benefit from the most. The Learning Style is made up of thirty-nine statements completing the sentence, “I learn and remember best by…”, are given value by the respondent based upon a Likert Scale from 5 (most preferred) to 1 (least preferred) and with 3 being “not sure”. Once the statements are completed the scores are then put into six different categories and then broken down into subcategories. Those categories are Interpersonal Communication, Field-Dependent/Independent, Modalities, The Action Model, Teacher/Student Task Relationships and Leadership/Management Skills for Teachers.
Barriers may potentially be avoided and or resolved, with the older patient, when having an open communication with the older patient before the clinical. If necessary the student may need to be reassigned. Male nurses at times struggle with acceptance from their female classmates who are used to having a different perspective on learning styles.
My older brother and I were in the garage with Tae Kwon Do mats spread across the concrete. My father, an instructor at the time, was teaching us how to correctly split a board in half with the palm of our hand. At seven years old, I failed time and time again - hitting the board as hard as I could, without making a single split in the wood. I can remember shaking my head side-to-side, frustrated with my failure. That 's when my father picked my chin up and told me that while my formation was in place, my mind was not. After giving him a crooked face of confusion, he explained further - "Believe you can do this. Say it out loud if you have to.” To this very day, especially as I am fighting the battles of college and earning my degree in petroleum engineering, these words are my first approach to effective learning. My character, before anything else, is my strongest asset as a student.
