If we are to establish that good writing is made up of basic control of the language that is being written, adherence to conventions of grammar and style, and the ability to present a cogent argument and reasonable support for that argument, I may qualify as a good writer. However, it must be recognized that there is a great deal of distance from simply being good at a subject or task and having developed mastery of the same. When I was a small child, I didn't like writing unless I was writing something I wanted to. As a result, most of my school work was done half-heartedly, because they were all research projects that we had to do. I didn't have any issues with my writing, and my handwriting was pretty good at my age. My favorite books were the Harry Potter series. I thought I was pretty cool to be able to read such a long book, so I bragged some to my friends. The only topic I liked to write about was fantasy. In second grade, my mom made me start writing every day in a wide ruled journal, so I wrote a story about the Legend of Zelda, a video game I liked. I wrote about it every day for a long time, maybe a year, until I kinda gave up, and wrote the last page

My history as a student is not great; I had a lot of ups and downs frequently. I used to have problems staying out of trouble. Also my concentration wasn’t ever any good either so my ability to pay attention was not good either. My grades were barely passing and some were failing grades. I went through high school behind on my credits and not taking school as serious as I should as I should of. My discipline record in the past wasn’t good either; I always would get suspensions and detentions for my actions.

As I finished my first semester of college, I was super excited and thrilled when I realized not once did I have to write a paper for any of my classes. There were some paragraphs and summaries here and there but they were pretty standard. When I realized that I was going to have to take Rhetoric 105, a writing course, I freaked out not because there would be a lot of readings but because of the writing expectations. Obviously, I am a decent writer if I was able to get accepted to multiple universities and get good grades throughout my writing career. It has always been difficult for me to find a writing process that works well for me. Over the past years, I have struggled with writing papers and thinking creatively. However, I feel as if I have established a writing process that works for me.

I learned about the different styles of essays and how I can effectively improve my writing techniques and integrate them into my professional writing experiences. I know what to look for and how to improve my writing text. Knowing how to apply these techniques in my writing will better able me to write informative and persuasive documents and describe the detailed facts into my professional career writings. Throughout the year, my scores in writing have gone up and down but has shown a general increase. My current writing average is higher than my writing average at the beginning of the year which shows my improvement. My biggest problems in my writing have been MLA formatting, grammar mistakes, and commentary. At first, I made MLA formatting mistakes constantly with my margins, contractions, spacing, and headers. My first few writing assignments were filled with MLA formatting errors but over time, as I lost points from MLA formatting errors, I learned to avoid them. The use of technology has made learning to write more difficult for me. I am quite dependent on technology for pretty much everything I do, my writing skills has bottomed out with little or no progress since freshman year of high school. Throughout high school we spent very little time on writing assignments that had to be completed during class, therefore causing a little bit of laziness on my part. When rereading my major paper one, I noticed a few issues but also a few improvements. My writing had improved from exercise one tremendously, I managed to really focus on making this paper an informational paper whereas in my other writing I struggled with putting my opinion in. My writing also improved in the grammatical sense I noticed fewer comma splices and run on sentences. My paper had taken on a professional tone, that my previous writing lacked. My biggest struggle in writing would be starting my introduction because I never really know what information to add in my stating my thesis statement. Although, one way I’m trying to improve this struggle is by either adding small quotes or definitions to hook the reader and to add some info about my topic. Furthermore, one essay that I feel reflects my writing the best would be the midterm essay. I picked the midterm essay because even though it was timed I still took my time and carefully picked which examples I thought would best represent my opinions. In addition, I feel using the quote “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” by Nelson Mandela was a very powerful way to keep the reader interested. Ultimately, while I still haven’t overcome the obstacle of writing an introduction I know I’m slowly starting to find my way towards my goal of not struggling when it comes to starting my essays.

I have been studying and learning English for more than 11 years, and of course, I am willing to do my best to improve its. However, whatever I did, writing skill still is my biggest weakness. For me, during the writing process, thinking up the ideas for a specific topic and expressing those are a real problem. However, after finished English 905 class, my writing skill has been changed significantly.
