The Psychology career I chose is Counseling Psychologist. Usually Counseling Psychologists find work at schools, businesses, hospitals or mental health clinics. They have to have an experience of a 1-2 year internship to qualify for a license but first they have to earn a Psy.D. My entire life I have always been on the search of a career that would fit my persona, fit who I truly am, and to become someone who will constantly have the ability to help people through their difficult problems that they face. Throughout my life I have been deemed the type of person that people felt comfortable coming to with their problems. Maybe people feel this way because they sense that I have a sympathetic ear? Well, all I can say is that human behavior has always seemed interesting to me and that is probably why I made the decision to go down the psychology career pathway.

As a psychology graduate, with a BSc in Applied Psychology and MSc in Health Psychology, I’m currently seeking a role as ‘Assistant Psychologist’. It is for this reason I’m contacting you, as I believe my experience and education would make me the ideal candidate to work at Oakfield Psychological services in Altrincham. Studying psychology for four years has quipped me with the core skills needed to successfully conduct research and to apply psychological interventions. During my time as an undergraduate I focussed my research on personality dimensions and psychological well-being. This gave me an in depth understanding of the topic areas and provided me with report writing and data collection skills needed for further study.

“Few fields of study offer more career opportunities than does psychology” (Sternburg 3). There are a wide selection of specialties a person could go into with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. In graduate school, which is a must to attend, there is the option to explore the different specialities or to go into the desired specialty without any research of the others. There are also many options within a specific specialty. There is the option to be a teacher, to work for various organizations, be a speaker, to have your own practice, and many others. In the psychology field these options can all be combined. In fact it is expected of psychologists to do more activities involving their specialty than solely sit in an office and listen to patients. Pursuing and completing an undergraduate degree will earn an individual the title of a reflective scholar. A reflective scholar is a graduate that has completed a Bachelors or Bachelorette degree. Next, is the practitioner-scholar, which, is an individual that has graduated with a Masters degree. Following the practitioner-scholar is the scholar-practitioner, who is a graduate that has complete a program at a Doctoral level (McClintock, 2003). Have you ever wondered why people do the things they do? Everyone behaves differently in their own little ways, but sometimes these things cannot be understood. Through psychology, people are able to interpret behavior and apply the data to diagnose mental illnesses. As Ronald Reagan once said, “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone”. The role of being a psychologist means helping others by studying behavioral, cognitive, and social processes. This information is interpreted and then used to benefit others emotionally and mentally, and allows people to better understand how the mind works. Becoming a psychologist is rewarding when you consider the responsibilities, salary, and requirements associated with the profession.

I want to be a psychologist. I would love to learn all about the way people act, think and feel and at the same time try to help them. I have a very easygoing personality and I love to have fun and laugh. I ask a lot of questions, and I think I am very easy to get along with. If I was pursuing a career in psychology I would much rather work outside of an academic setting. Only because If I was to relate this to the job that I am choosing for the future. You see I am going to get my bachelors in elementary education and getting my masters in occupational therapy. Psychology is the study of the mind, its biology, and behavior if the individual. The father of psychology, Wilhelm Wundt, used objective measurement and controlled analyzing to find and emphasize separation between psychology and philosophy (McLeod). Wundt opened the Institute for Experimental Psychology at the University of Leipzig in Germany in 1879, using his background in physiology to study reactions and sensations (McLeod). There is no doubt that he, along with the later help of Sigmund Freud, launched what is now modern psychology. Psychology and its research helped the world understand the inner workings of the mind and how it affects everyone around us.
