Artisans all have tools they proudly weld in the pursuit of their craft. Musicians have their instruments of wood, brass, string and voice. Sculptors and painters have their materials of metals, clays, pigments and canvas while dancers use their bodies and costumes. These items are all used as tools of personal expression for the artist. Many artists appear to be born with natural talents for their art or are drawn to one medium of expression over another, but none excel at their craft without dedication and deliberate practice. The same is true for leadership. Not all who effectively lead are born with innate abilities that attract followers. Each of us brings our own combination of life experiences, personal traits and stylistic preferences to the practice of leadership. Through the act of deliberate reflection and contemplation, we become aware of ourselves and how our experiences and traits are likely to help or hinder our pursuit of effective leadership. The community may be a business with goals of sales and profit or it may be a professional, civic or volunteer association with goals of serving the needs of others. The community may even be our own individual family focusing on the growth and education of our loved ones. Each of these communities have their own goals and purposes and we are members of them all. It is in these varying roles of our lives that the context of leadership exists. As leaders, we excel in our craft not in the specific traits and behaviors we exhibit to provide control or influence but in the interactions we cultivate with the members of our communities as we guide them towards common
My leadership philosophy is fairly straightforward and simple. I believe that a good leader is someone who helps others to make the best of themselves. A credible leader is able to accomplish this goal by providing inspiration and confidence in others, which allows them to fulfill the objectives of their mission and organization. Thus, in helping others to fulfill the goals of an individual mission, a leader is really helping his subordinates to fulfill their own personal career goals and develop themselves professionally.
The path to a personal leadership philosophy is made up of three parts. Each individual aspect is a facet of a complete whole. Much like a timeline that includes a past, present and future, my personal philosophy consists of a foundation, action, and growth. If you do not understand where your foundation of leadership came from, you will have problems acting in a leadership capacity. Also if don’t pay attention to how you are acting as a leader you cannot know in what ways you need to grow. Why should I spend the time and effort in developing myself as a leader? The Gunner’s Mate rating has a strength of just over 600 members. Maritime Force Protection Unit Kings Bay has 31 Gunner’s Mates assigned to it. I have a full five percent of the Gunner’s Mates in the Coast Guard that I lead. During my four year assignment at MFPU Kings Bay, approximately 55 Gunner’s mates (9.2 percent) will have been under my leadership. I see that as an enormous responsibility. As a young Gunner’s Mate I saw my senior leadership as people capable of effecting great change on the rating. Now today I am in the position to have that same impact.
According to dictionary.com leadership is defined as, the position or function of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group: Its synonyms include guidance, influence, control, direction and supervision. These are all qualifications that are needed to be an effective leader. All characteristics are not necessarily needed at the same time and do no need to be used for each subordinate. This paper will identify my personal leadership philosophy along with theories to support my leadership style.

Leadership is the process of influencing others to accomplish the mission by providing purpose, direction, and motivation. Command is the authority a person in the military service lawfully exercises over subordinates by virtue of his rank and assignment or position.(FM 6-22) My leadership philosophy has been developing thru my Army career. I have use the NCO creed as a pillar for my Leadership philosophy. The outcome of my performance is a direct reflects of my subordinates. My ideas will not always the best, that is why my Soldiers have a open door to provide any feedback.
My personal leadership philosophy is based upon a few core values that I follow. I live by honesty, hard work, loyalty, and strong support and care for family and friends. Some of the key attributes of a good leader are: providing direction and guidance, inspiring followers to always do their best, show courage and confidence to stand up for your beliefs, have a passion and commitment for what you are doing. A good leader will share their vision of success with the group and make sure everyone understands the direction that they need to go in. The leader needs to make sure that each member knows their expectations and how important their efforts are in reaching the goals of the organization. This means that a leader must empower others to have a sense of ownership for their work. This is accomplished by giving clear goals and objectives and then giving them the freedom to complete their objectives without micro managing them. Another leadership trait is the ability to motivate and inspire the group. The leader needs to be the spark that ignites inspiration and passion for the job. This can be accomplished by positive reinforcement while rewarding and recognizing good results. Good leaders will always lead by example and demonstrate the values of honesty and integrity. There is no grey line between what is right and wrong. To me honesty is being truthful to others while keeping your uprightness of character. It is matching what you say with what you do. It seems we hear a considerable amount on the topic of leadership today. Moral, business and particularly political leadership gains attention on our national news, personal conversations and even appearing on posts within social networks.
Leadership starts at the top, and the top is not the man, but the faith in God that flows out of him. There is, different types of leadership and many ways to display this quality. God is our ultimate leader, and He revealed ways on how to be an effective leader in the church, in the house and in life. Therefore, the focus of this paper will be the Pastor epistles and the type of leadership model that they share and put forth. Now, effective ways of leadership may manifest differently in each individual. God made us all unique and gave each of us a specific talent or gift. Therefore, this class has made me investigate and look at myself more in depth and see what type of leadership model I would follow, and feel is the best model.

Leadership. Like all ideas leadership can be defined in a variety of different ways, and so it become challenge to choose just one way to word such a definition. To me a strong leader is one who can effectively develop an idea which they can they can then achieve by conveying this idea to others and motivating them to reach the goal with themselves. I have no doubt that I possess some of these qualities but certainly not all of them. I believe that I am quite strong at developing a process to reach to reach this said goal, and also at directing people to reach the goal by following my plan. Hughes et al. (2012) states that leadership is a complex phenomenon involving the leader, followers, and the situation. Leadership is and has been very important at all levels of life. Not everyone has the power to influence, the integrity, the ethics and the motivation to undertake tasks whether they are simple and basic or complicated and advanced. One leadership researcher defines leadership as “the process of influencing an organized group toward accomplishing its goals” (Hughes et al. 2012). With that being said, Leaders need power to influence others and the ability to empower others. All great leaders start with a vision, and inspires people to engage with that vision as well as they are very efficient in developing, innovating, inspiring and motivating by coaching the team towards achieving the vision.
Throughout my life leadership has always had a short definition to me. After taking this class it has made feel stronger about my definition. If I had to define leadership I would say it is getting someone or a group from point A to point B. When I say getting from point A to point B I do not necessarily mean from one destination to another. I use this as a figure of speech for completing a goal. Point A is where you are when you decide what the goal is and Point B is accomplishing the goal.
