Merriman Webster’s Dictionary defines a bully as “one habitually cruel to others who are weaker.” One could venture to say that bullies have been around as long as there have been stronger and weaker people in the world. Miller (2012) points out that oftentimes bullies are people who are aware of the variation in others because they themselves have experienced the world in some way that is different from the general norm. He goes on to mention that bullying could be considered a form of microaggression and assumes many different shapes. Lastly, he identifies a series of different types of bullying that bullies can perpetuate which include: verbal, physical, material, relational, hate-motivated, and cyber (Miller 2012).

According to the American Psychological Association, “Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions” (Bullying, 2013). People bully each other for several reasons and there are different outcomes that are a result of those reasons. People can be bullied physically, emotionally, or verbally. Bullying can take place at school or online. Bullying should be a considered a crime, but kids get away with it all the time; furthermore prevention can be used in order to keep kids safe from bullying.

Bullies may grow up and lead a life of ultimate rebellion or crime. These students start off with bullying and advance into acts of vandalism, theft, and alcohol and possible drug abuse. Left unchallenged, the bully will never understand that their behavior is inappropriate. The bully will grow up, victimize, and start a family of budding, pint-sized oppressors. Bullying is a learned behavior. Whereas, the victim may live a life of depression and anxiety. The victim may never reach their full potential because of fear and uncertainty. The victim has a difficult time making and keeping friends, and seeks to stay clear of confrontation. The victim loses his/her control or voice and lives in the shadow of the aggressor.
