The civil war ended in 1865 but that wasn’t the end of their struggle. Slavery had been discontinued, and with it southerners were obligated to ratify the 14th amendment. Lots of changes happened between 1865 and 1877 mostly revolving around black equality. This period of time was called reconstruction. It altered they way we view blacks today, and at the time was a major event, especially for previous slave owners. A large portion of America was democratic and opposed slavery, many of them forming leuges aganist it. And when black people were freed there were 4 million people without jobs, and landowners without money to pay for workers. There were some of the many reasons why Congress’ Reconstruction was a sucessful one. Congress’ Reconstruction efforts failed because of the democrats whos appossed slavery, the men who created white leagues, and the scarcity of jobs. A republican man named Rutherford Hayes was elected as president in 1876. He won by the total electorial vote which on document 4 was 185 votes, but if you look at the popular vote, Democratic Samuel Tilden won by about 150,000 more votes. This proves that most of the …show more content…
A quote from Document 8 says “ In May 1872, because of pressure from the libral Republican, Congress passed a general amnesty act which restored the right of officeholding [and voting] to the vast majority of those who had been disqualified.” Previously most black men had been disqualified from voting because of the lack of education, but all of that went away in an attempt to restore equality. White men were firious and would not stand to see this happent. Document four says “Let there be White Leagues formed in every town, village and hamlet of the south...they will not stand idly by and see us borne down by northern radicals and half-barbarous negroes.” White people formed grooups such as the KKK to torture the black people and prevent them from effecting white
After the civil war, the Federal government went to many lengths to try and help freedmen in former slave states. But these expansions were quickly terminated after Rutherford B. Hayes was elected in 1876. The South had started to limit the rights of blacks within the boundaries that the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments allowed. And the North started to turn a blind eye to all of the problems that existed in the South. (C)In the end, both states contributed to the end of reconstitution, but the South made more efforts to persecute blacks than the North did. Although both the North and the South were responsible for ending reconstruction, the South was mainly responsible for the end of reconstruction in the South.
During the time period of 1860 and 1877 many major changes occurred. From the beginning of the civil war to the fall of the reconstruction, the United States changed dramatically. Nearly one hundred years after the Declaration of Independence which declared all men equal, many social and constitutional alterations were necessary to protect the rights of all people, no matter their race. These social and constitutional developments that were made during 1860 to 1877 were so drastic it could be called a revolution.
Government had brought the seceded Southern states back into the Union, and they ended slavery and they tried their best to protect newly emancipated the slaves. But they rebuilt the nation after a lot more four years of fighting. The reconstruction occurred in 2 phases, the Presidential Reconstruction was very lenient in order Southern states to rejoin the Union quickly, this was initiated by President Lincoln but was carried out by President Andrew Johnson. The Congressional Reconstruction was stricter and protected rights from former slaves and they kept Confederate leaders from regaining power. But, before the Civil War Lincoln proposed his 10% Plan, which was lenient and allowed the Confederate states could re-enter the Union when, 10% of their population had sworn an Oath of Loyalty and they ratified the 13th Amendment ending all slavery. But, the Radicals in Congress had rejected his plan because, it did not protect ex-slaves and didn’t keep them from regaining power, they also wanted to have 50% of the population to swear to an oath of loyalty. But, the states could come back once they ratified the 13th amendment. But, the southern passed black codes in order to keep African- Americans from getting any land, jobs, voting rights, and also protection under the law. Finally, in 1865, the Freedmen's Bureau had been established and offered assistance to former slaves and to protect their new
As a country, America has gone through many political changes. Leaders have come and gone, all of them having different objectives and plans for the future. One period of time in which leaders sought change was 1865 which was the time period known as Reconstruction. Reconstruction was a time period of many different leaders, different goals and different accomplishments. Many debate whether Reconstruction was a success or failure. Success is an event which accomplishes its intended purpose, which Reconstruction did, but during this process of accomplishment, evil came about. There was many good things that came from the Reconstruction era which leads me to believe that it was a success, these accomplishments were; Reunification of the Union , more laws came about along with the protection of African Americans and the Enforcement acts, the Freedmen's Bureau was created along with an education system, and the Compromise of 1877.
After the civil war there was a period from 1865 to 1877 called the reconstruction period. Which may be the reason african americans have the rights that they do today. The Reconstruction period was not all good, there were also laws that limited the rights of african americans called “jim crow laws”. Sharecropping also was developed which was practically a legal form of slavery. Over all American Reconstruction was a success due to all of the rights that african americans gained, but it didn't happen easily.
“A truly united America has been created. Let’s hope that our Reconstruction bridges this condition perfectly.” Such a senatorial speech fell to be false. Instead of fulfilling Lincoln’s dream, Reconstruction turned out to be a complete failure as it divided both sides (again) and created an irreversible shift. Officially, Reconstruction is recognized to have an end, not by success, but by disaster. Unlike what is often thought amongst people, the actual death of Reconstruction was caused by both sides of America; in other words, Southern resistance and Northern neglect.
Reconstruction was the time between 1863 and 1877 when the U.S. focused on abolishing slavery, destroying the Confederacy, and reconstructing the nation and the Constitution and is also the general history of the post-Civil War era in the U.S. between 1865 and 1877. Under Abraham Lincoln, presidential reconstruction began in each state as soon as federal troops controlled most of the state. The usual ending date is 1877, when the Compromise of 1877 saw the collapse of the last Republican state governments in the South
There is still inequality here in the United States, but back then it was terrible. There was even a reconstruction era to try and fix these racial tensions but ultimately failed. After the civil war the reconstruction era began to develop to reconnect the eleven states that left the union and welcome to newly freedman as "equals". There were newly formed groups like scalawags, carpetbaggers, and freedman that help make a new form of government, also there were amendments made to make sure Africans were treated a regular citizens. Even though there where positive things like these many things caused the downfall and eventually killed reconstruction. Ultimately The South destroyed the rebuilding process by forming terrorist groups and discriminating
Reconstruction era was a period of extraordinary changes for African Americans. However, few of these changes lasted long enough for blacks to engage in the freedom they earned. During the reconstruction era man new acts and laws came into place, unfortunately these were not acknowledged, this caused for discrimination to prevail. The Civil Rights Movement provided mass movement to end the racial segregation and discrimination. Countless black youth and adults risked their lives to address the reconstruction failure of promoting education and economic quality, and create an end for unfair voting.
After four years of war, the South finally surrendered and the Civil War was finally over. After the war, the South had been wrecked. The south faced work of the Reconstruction really hard because not only was there a shortage of materials, but there were few stocks of merchandise, and there were not that many schools for teachers to teach in. After the Civil War, slaves had been freed. The newly slaves had nowhere to go, and were roaming around looking for help or work. The government tried to help the slaves which benefited the slaves a lot. 2 ways the African American were benefited during the Reconstruction was by the Freedmen’s bureau and the 13th Amendment. 2 ways the African Americans were negatively affected by Reconstruction was the Rise of KKK and Sharecropping.
Charles Kettering once said that “The world hates change, yet it is the only thing that has brought progress.” Many difficult changes occurred between the years of 1820 and 1848. This era brought vibrant political movements towards a greater democracy and was a time of advancements and reformation, which forever impacted American ideals. Issues with slavery, women’s rights, and the common man indicate a large shift in American society due to political and economic changes from 1820 to 1848.
The Civil War has ended. The Union won. Slavery was abolished. Reconstruction was just getting started. But not everyone was happy with what was happening with reconstruction or slavery. What were the slaves going to do? They had nothing. Some things that caused whites and blacks trouble was the black codes being made, voting troubles because of the Ku Klux Klan, and the Election of 1874.
After the Civil War there were still many changes that had to take place within the United States. The period of Congressional Reconstruction took place from 1865 through 1877. Although the outcome of the Civil War greatly affected things there were still various problems that had to be solved. This period of time after the Civil War was the reconstruction of congress. Congressional reconstruction was a very crucial time in American history, it changed the way of life in the South, the president caused difficulties with it, and Radical Republicans took over in congress. The goal of Congressional Reconstruction was to reunite the South with the Union. The outcome of Congressional Reconstruction resulted in a better
The Civil War was a massive milestone in American History. This war started in 1861 and lasted four years. It was between the Union and the Confederacy over their differences and problems they created. The consequences the nation faced due to the demolition of the Civil War, was terrifying. Then the Reconstruction era was born to restore, reinstate, and unite the United States as one. During the Reconstruction of 1865 through 1867, African American lives were impacted economically because they were given few rights and their resources were limited, socially because they wanted to be given an ordinary lifestyle, and politically because they weren’t allowed to be joined or linked with the government.
After the Civil the War the United States was left in shambles, the question surrounding what to do with the roughly 4 million slaves continued to be a daunting question. Prior to the Civil War the southern economy relied heavily on slaves to produce cotton. Once the war was over the South had to reestablish its labor force. The United States as a whole had to address the question of what to do with the 11 states that had succeed. In addition, the government as a whole was deeply divided regarding the topic of Reconstructions.
