"Just because of your birthdate, are you dangerous?" (Should Driving Be Raised to 18? by John D'Amico and Alex Koroknay-Palicz). Lawmakers and state legislators are considering raising the age for legal drivers from sixteen to eighteen. But doing so will bring more harm than good. First, cars are essential for transportation, and teenagers today desperately need that transportation. Second, the government should focus on bigger issues such as drunk driving or speeding. Finally, eighteen year olds will be just as prone to accidents as sixteen year olds. Therefore, the legal driving age should not be raised. In today's world, cars are used continuously and daily. Much is asked of teenagers and they are immensely busy. Teenagers have jobs, extra cirricular activities, church meetings, homework, school responsibilities and family responsibilities. And on top of it all, they have social lives to maintain. While raising the age for legal drivers has good intentions, it is nearly impossible due to all that is asked of from teens. In the article, "Should 16-year-olds-drive?" it says, "Ryan Moore, 16, got his driver's license in June. He ... needed his license as soon as possible. Both parents work, and he had to get himself from football practive to his job as a lifeguard." Teenagers need cars in daily lives to fulfill all that is asked of them. The article, "States Urged to Raise the Driving Age" says, "We are worrying too much about teen drivers and not enough about others who cause serious problems on the road. The intense focus on teens diverts our attention from the real threats to public saftey". Some of these threats include drunk driving, speeding, carjacking and texting while driving.
