Stop Freaking Out About Artificial Intelligence

Good Essays

Due to the ways that the media depicts futuristic dystopias, many fear the potential reality of a world conquered by entities of artificial intelligence. In their article “Let’s Stop Freaking Out About Artificial Intelligence”, Eric Schmidt and Sebastian Thrun argue that the continual effort towards developing artificial intelligence (AI) will provide assistance to humanity essential for building a better future. Although AI is currently limited to mindless tasks that don’t range past folding laundry and customer service, Schmidt and Thrun believe that the development of AI “Is truly a global effort, with global potential” (Schmidt and Thrun par. 10). As with many of the innovations that define humanity, AI has the capabilities to replace human …show more content…

The cumulative history of humanity teaches two lessons: humans are terrible savages with no morals, but more importantly, the reason humans have fared so well is their ability to collaborate and band together to reach a common goal. When confronted by Hank Pym’s Ultron, Tony Stark boldly claimed that his team would defeat Ultron “Like the old man said: together” (Marvel 2015). Time and time again, the invincible Iron Man has displayed that beyond his physical prowess, his greatest strength lies with his friends, proving the positive correlation between the number of collaborators and the speed of achievement. Therefore, the introduction of (artificial) superintelligent entities, who each possess the totality of human and AI knowledge, to serve as intellectual associates will greatly enhance the rate at which humanity can innovate. In addition to accelerating research, AI entities can utilize the results and apply them to real world situations with more precision than a human worker is capable of. In 2012, IBM and the Cleveland Clinic collaborated, utilizing Watson, an AI entity to “Improve the speed and accuracy of medical diagnosis and treatments” (Washington Post, 2016). The precision of AI systems in diagnosing medical conditions could save countless lives, as misdiagnosis due to human assumptions accounts for over seventeen percent of deaths in hospitals. Furthermore, robotic physicians eliminate the possibility human errors, incidents that often prove to be fatal. The introduction of artificial intelligence entities as associates will benefit humanity as a collective population through enhancing the rate of
