Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, also known as ADHD is when an individual has issues focusing on tasks, paying attention, has a tendency to act without thinking, as well as trouble sitting still. The main symptoms of ADHD are hyperactivity, inattentiveness, and impulsivity. ADHD begins in early childhood and can stay with a person well into adulthood. A child is most often diagnosed with ADHD between the ages of six and twelve. As a person ages their symptoms can change. Hyperactivity and impulsivity stand out most in young children. In elementary age inattention stands out most. In adolescence its restlessness, although inattention and impulsivity may also remain and carry on into adulthood. The reason why is that they have to determine if it actually is ADHD or other circumstances. ADHD can also be mistaken for emotional or disciplinary issues. There could also be a delay in diagnosing children that are well behaved and quiet. The Limitations that I see when researching ADHD is in the form of the medications that they prescribe to individuals that have ADHD. The reason being is that there are no long-term improvements when taking psychostimulants. Academically they stay in the same range as they were before the medication. Statistically they show no improvement in learning, behavior or any other areas. So, what is the point of taking them if they are not helping you improve? When an individual does take psychostimulants for ADHD some of the side effects are insomnia, weight loss, reduced appetite and headaches. Insomnia and headaches, to me, can play a factor in how well an individual does in school so taking the pills may negatively affect them that way as well. Another thing is that sometimes the medication is not taken on a regular basis because of the side effects. They are not usually taken during the weekends or at night during the
