This chapter is written to be informative and persuasive for new college students. In the opening section of the chapter the author shares a story of a time he worked in a English theatre. He explains that workers would pass the time with a book while there was a play and how the background noise made it so that he had to intently focus on each word that he was reading. His thesis states “I never really thought about the important connections between reading and writing, and how reading in a particular way could also make me a better writer” (p.72). The next section he explains that RLW means that you’re reading see the specific words used by the author to see what effect they have, their context, genre, and purpose. He encourages the reader
The essay written by Michael Bunn, entitled “How to Read Like a Writer” conferred the main outlook that someone as a writer needs to examine, and keep in mind while reading any kind of written manuscripts far beyond the typical reading set of mind.
Thus, I am worthy to aid others with their academic encounters (Walden University (2014c)). Similarly, in the second part of the test, I learned I have an aural learning style. Before week three, I never thought about this area. But it is true that when I listen to music while studying, I focus much better than studying in silence. The music also provides inspiration when I get tired or feel like I cannot finish an assignment (Walden University (2014 d)).Again, In the discussion this week, I learned, story’s, paintings, videos and music are all a kind of effective realism. And incorporating voices, video or descriptive words can alter how I envision a piece of work. Therefore, it is imperative to be eloquent with words. Hence, write so the reader can get the actual importance the author is trying to portray. Too, I learned that the plot of the story can be transformed exaggeratedly when technology is added.
strategies which are analyze, evaluate, and formulate. When these reading strategies are utilized by a reader, the benefits of understanding the text will be accomplished. To use outlining as a strategy about the writer’s motives, and summarizing would give the reader more information than they want to receive. The use of The Little Seagull Handbook is a very reliable and effective reading source for any
My English Literature major has helped me to achieve an outstanding level of appreciation, enjoyment, and knowledge of both American and British Literature. As a high school AP English student, I struggled through great works like Hamlet and To the Lighthouse. My teacher’s daily lectures (there was no such thing as class discussion) taught me merely to interpret the works as critics had in the past. I did not enjoy the reading or writing process. As a freshman at Loras, I was enrolled in the Critical Writing: Poetry class. For the first time since grade school, my writing ability was praised and the sharing of my ideas was encouraged by an enthusiastic and nurturing professor. Despite the difficulty of poetry, I enjoyed reading it.
This learning activity has the students looking more deeply into their chosen book using a more critical mind rather than just enjoying the book for its basic story line. It has them taking note of what is happening at each stage of the book and why these events are taking place, then taking this information they have gathered and developing a written report to convey their thoughts and ideas in the book along with developing the skills necessary to produce a piece of writing that is easy to read and understand for the reader. This activity also has a lot of hidden features to the task, such as using the correct grammar, development of sentence structure and use of creative thinking to make the piece interesting to the reader.
“Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are,” (Cooley). Throughout our lives, reading has impacted us in many ways. Often times books give people different perspectives on their lives. People with high stress levels often find comfort in reading books to take their mind off of their concerns. Sometimes, people just need to take a step back from their lives and relax for a while; therefore, reading is a great tool. In fact, all kinds of books have also helped me become a better writer. There are many different books that have impacted me over the years.
In the informational essay “Reading to Write,” King incorporates rhetorical strategies such as ethos, pathos, and logos, to develop his position on the importance of talent and practice in life. Throughout the paper, the author establishes credibility by introducing the specific methods he employs in his everyday life. One sentences states, “The sort of strenuous reading and writing program I advocate-four to six hours a day, everyday”(King 214). King provides this statement to display how his writing skills have strengthened, ultimately informing the audience that in order to develop better literary techniques, you need to read multiple hours of the day.
In literary education, from childhood to maturity, individuals are taught how to write not to improve themselves as critical thinkers, but to fulfill the requirements given to them in a prompt. Whether to analyze or argue, this form of writing has led to a cease of literary improvement in students today, making many question the effectiveness of writing classes. Mike Bunns, in his article “To Read like a Writer”, explores this topic and stresses the necessity for young readers to critically examine the author’s choices in order to improve their own pieces of work. Bunns effectively argues to his audience of college students that improved comprehension comes from focusing on the rhetorical choices authors decide to make in their compositions by tying personal narratives with repetitive questioning throughout his article.
In the first chapter, Prose already addresses the central hypothesis of the book - to be become a good writer, you must be a good reader. She recalls, of how she too remedied her own obstacles and monsters in her writing through close reading.
In Carr’s article he explains that he is a writer and the internet has become very useful to him over the years. However, he’s noticed that his attention span has shortened to where it’s difficult for him to focus on a lengthy piece of writing. Carr describes his troubles by stating that he finds himself unconsciously skimming through the text instead of thoroughly reading word for word. Carr quotes Maryanne Wolf, a developmental psychologist at Tufts University who says “We are how we read.” Wolf worries that the style
Urmson believes that if someone reads the novel out loud, that the spoken words reflect the novel. Urmson comes to the conclusion by comparing literature to other works of art, that literature is a performance art and an oral act. He does not factor in the complication of language. What instructions should a performer follow in recreating a work of literature? Urmnson admits that he has not determined the set of instructions and as the reader of his work, this notion imposes the sense of uncomplition. Urmson finds literature as problematic because there is no “recipe”. This notion is ilrelevant because the majority of readers do not read literature for its systematic tendencies, but for enjoyment. Each story an author creates is different is some aspect. Unlike theatre, the performer does not act out the writing, they only read the literature. Yet, Urmnson states that there are many different intentions for literature. Some literature is meant to be read aloud, while others in private. “Literature is essentially an oral act” (pg.90). Since the reader comprehends the writing, they are preforming the writing. As a person reads Mister
In the duration of this course, I was more informed on how English literature was started. I became more educated on how the styles and tones the authors utilize have an affect on the readers. Although I had already read many of the stories we studied, I became more enlightened on the background history of the authors of those stories. Becoming more cultivated on the authors enabled me to view their accounts in ways that I wouldn’t have usually considered.
[The central focus of this learning segment is “Students describe characters’ influence on story structure in discussions, in writing, and by making text-to-self connections to their own personal experiences”. In this unit, students are reading books in small ability grouped literature circles and are also being read to aloud from Louis Sachar’s Holes.
It’s easy to get caught up in the argument that college writing is just a tool one must use while in college. While that may be true, in the long run that dreaded writing will become an important skill even long after finishing school. Writing is what can help smooth the path to your professional and personal goals. How can it smooth the journey? Well, besides improving critical thinking, writing improves speech and reading and has increasingly become an important job skill.
Over the past month, we have been studying the concept of reading and writing in different communities. To assess this, we have read two different texts. Richard Rodriguez’s the achievement of desire”, from his autobiography “Hunger of Memory”; and Lucille McCarthy’s “A Stranger in Strange Lands: A College Student Writing across the Curriculum” from “Research in the Teaching of English”. Both answer key questions regarding what it takes to become a great reader and writer, however, from the reading that I have done, each one only answers one part of the question. Rodriguez’s main focus is in the aspect of reading, whereas McCarthy mainly focuses on the writing portion. Both do a decent job of analyzing and putting forth a view of how they believe a person can best perform in these environments. This then allows us to use their concepts and create our own version, based on their points of view. But why should we care? Most people at this level of academia will have developed a system of writing that works for them, and will have a difficult time breaking from it if they’re process doesn’t meet the criteria that Rodriguez, and McCarthy put forth. The reason it’s so important is because of implications these ideas have. Both authors put forth concepts that are indirectly related to one another and that are highly beneficial to all who will apply them. They will force you to conform to new environments in order to succeed, this in turn will make you more
