The movie Remember the Titans takes place at a newly integrated high school in Alexandria, Virginia circa 1971. When two schools integrate, their football teams, coaches included, do as well. Because of social differences driven by racial issues, the players do not agree with the change; consequently, the Titans suffer as a team. One of the coaches, Herman Boone, sees this as a major problem, so he takes the entire team out for a run at 3 a.m. to the nearby historic battlefield of Gettysburg. In the beginning of the film there was a lot of hatred towards each race as the whites and blacks didn’t get along well with each other, little did they know that they would both be put on the same football team and have to participate in a camp if they were serious about joining the team. The person that they were sitting next to in the bus was the person they would be bunking with for the next two weeks and it happened that both Gerry and Julius were both in the same room. The issue that started the conflict between the two was Julius had hung a “black people power” poster on the wall which Gerry found intimidating. This resulted in Gerry attempting to remove the poster with force. This is what sparked the fight between the two and before long the entire team jumped in and fought for their own race in a tiny little dorm. As each day went on, they got to know each other bit by bit and would come closer to becoming friends probably because of the fact that they were the two head captains of the team and had to set an example for the rest of their own race and get them to all become friends, otherwise the team would fall apart. In Alexandria 1971, high school football was a way of life, for everyone. So when a local school board was forced to integrate an all black school with an all white school, the foundation that football was set on would be put to the test. During this film, many of the characters face moral issues and dilemmas that change the way that they will see things forever. One of those characters includes Gerry Bertier who struggles to befriend his African American teammate, he also struggles to accept what is going on around him. Those are some of the biggest obstacles for a teenager from that time to face, most white families taught their children that the African Americans were trouble, to not go near them that they were animals. And consequently, to not disrespect their families they stayed away, believing everything that their parents had said, creating a disrespectful stereotype of African-American citizens.

Remembering the Titans is an inspiring and uplifting movie about two races coming together and being unified, through football. In the 1970s, segregation was fought, and schools formed that contained both whites and blacks. Through the process of an all-white and all-black school coming together, much tension set in and this is no different when it came to the football team. Coach Yoast, the coach of the all-white football team, is replaced by Coach Boone. Coach Boone is an African American coach that has a leading reputation in football and a demanding attitude. Even while receiving numerous other coaching opportunities, Coach Yoast decides to serve as an assistant coach under Coach Boone.

Remember the Titans is a film based on the true story of Virginia High School football team working to come together during desegregation in the 1970s. Herman Boone, a black head coach, is hired to lead the T.C Williams High School Football Team. The team formerly led by a white coach, Bill Yoast, is better known by their nickname, The Titans. Both Boone and Yoast must work together to bring their white and black players together in a time where segregation across racial lines in the south was commonly accepted. Boone and Yoast are successful in doing this during the team’s training camp, only to return to find that bringing the team together would be only one of the challenges they faced. We see both coaches work together and lead the team to an undefeated season that helped unite the town and overcome its own racial strife.

Good morning fellow peers and Mr Harrop. To day I will be discussing the moral issues and moral dilemmas in the film Remember The Titans, released in 2001, directed by Boaz Yakin. During this film a winning virginia state high school all white team, the titans, is forced to play alongside an all black team coming from an outside high school. This film is based around the moral issues and dilemmas of a heavily racist all white team having to merge with a team of all black team members. This causes a riot within the school and alongside this is uprooted by the parents of the boys. The Head coach, Bill yoast portrayed by Will Patton, is pushed down to assistant coach in order to allow a black coach to be positioned as the head coach, Herman Boone portrayed by Denzel Washington. I will be discussing the way the director has used language features, camera angles, and visual techniques in order to depicts the struggles that come from all perspectives during the film.

Overtime, the players learned to establish life-long friendships, not to judge a book by its cover, and to learn from each other. The main idea of the film is to show the extreme prejudices are made about a whole group of people before one even gets to know a person from this group. I have watched this movie countless times before but this time when I watched it was different than before. I always knew it was obviously a movie about racism, but I never picked up on tiny parts of the dialogue and certain scenes stood out as much more significant to me than they have in the past. For example, at one point in the movie a brick is thrown through Coach Boone’s window while his daughter and Sheryl Yoast are playing in the living room. The next day, Coach Yoast is angry about what happened. He accuses Coach Boone for it being his fault that the brick was thrown through his window because of his “sins”. Coach Boone is very offended by this and points out that he did not do anything to deserve it and also that maybe now Sheryl has an idea of what his daughters go through every day of their lives.
