A mixture of thiamine hydrochloride (3.5 g, 0.01 moles), and deionized water (10 mL, 0.555 moles) was added into a 100 mL round bottom flask, and swirled until the thiamine hydrochloride had dissolved. Ethanol (30 mL, 0.521 moles) and 2 M sodium hydroxide (10 mL, 0.27 moles) were added to the flask, swirled in, and cooled in an ice bath for 4 minutes. Upon removal from the ice bath, the flask was gently heated by reflux for 30 minutes. Cold deionized water (20 mL, 1.11 moles) was added into the detached round bottom flask, and the reaction was allowed to crystallize for 2 minutes.
