Gottfried von Strassburg (d. c. 1210)

Gottfried von Strassburg (got’frēt fōn sträs’börG). A German poet of the middle ages, and the most brilliant bard of chivalry; born in the twelfth century, and died between 1210 and 1220. He owes his permanent fame to ‘Tristan and Isolde,’ apparently written between 1204 and 1215 and left unfinished. It is based on the Anglo-Norman version of the story by Thomas and is the most important representative of that form of the story.
