Chapter 10, Problem 1TC
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The reason that the first meiotic division considered to be the reduction division for chromosome number.

Introduction:

Meiosis is a process of cell division in which four haploid daughter cells are produced. It is also known as a reductional division because the daughter cells receive the reduced number of chromosomes. Meiosis is important for the reproduction because it produces haploid gametes. Meiosis occurs in two stages meiosis I and meiosis II.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

The meiosis I produce daughter cells that contain half the number of duplicated chromosomes because it separates the “homologous chromosomes” to produce daughter cells that are haploid. So, the daughter cells receive one chromosome from each homologous pair.

This is due to the events that takes place in the anaphase I where sister chromatids are together even after the pull from the spindle fibers. Such meiotic divisions produce haploid gametes in humans.

Conclusion

The first meiotic division considered to be the reduction division for chromosome number because it separates the homologous chromosomes to produce haploid daughter cells.
