Concept explainers
Interpretation: The given question can be explained from the concept of acid base reaction homeostasis.
Conceptintroduction: Acid base reaction occurs when an acid reacts with a base. The homeostatic balance of the acid and base is the ionic regulation of the pH of the extracellular fluids of the body. The appropriate equilibrium of the acids and bases is vital for the normal functioning of the body. In living animals, the homeostasis between acids and bases is maintained by various mechanisms of the 3 lines of body’s defence systems.
Given: Here we are given the reaction of ammonium ion with water which forms ammonia and hydronium ions. It is given that at body temperature, the Ka is 5.6 x 10-10. A 125 ml buffer solution contains 3.34 g of ammonium chloride and 0.0151g of ammonia. We are asked to find out [NH4+], [NH3], [H3O+] and the pH of buffer. We also need to write the balanced chemicalequation that shows how this buffer neutralizes added acid and base.
